Eldoret, Kenya| The County Government of Uasin Gishu has taken a strategic step toward economic transformation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
This landmark partnership aims to position the county as a key player in Kenya’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism sector.
The agreement, signed on Monday at the Uasin Gishu County Headquarters, will enhance the county’s ability to attract high-profile conferences, exhibitions, and social events.
By leveraging KICC’s expertise and global networks, Uasin Gishu seeks to establish itself as a premier destination for business tourism, which is expected to drive economic growth and infrastructure development.
Unlocking Business and Investment Potential
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim emphasized the county’s readiness for investment, particularly in conferencing and tourism.
He noted that the collaboration with KICC aligns with Uasin Gishu’s broader vision of economic diversification and revenue expansion.
“This partnership will not only boost tourism but also create business opportunities, increase employment, and enhance the county’s visibility on the national and international stage,” said Governor Chelilim.
The MICE industry is recognized globally for its significant economic impact, as it attracts corporate travelers who contribute to local economies through accommodation, transport, dining, and leisure activities.
Uasin Gishu’s strategic location and existing infrastructure make it a prime candidate for business tourism expansion.
Enhancing County Profiling and Infrastructure
County Executive for Trade, Cooperatives, and Tourism, Martha Cheruto, highlighted the broader benefits of the MOU, stating that Uasin Gishu will now be actively profiled in both local and international markets as a MICE tourism hub.
“This agreement will elevate Uasin Gishu’s status in the tourism industry, allowing us to showcase our unique attractions and investment potential,” she said.
The county is also in the process of developing a County Museum, an initiative aimed at boosting revenue collection and enhancing cultural tourism.
This project is expected to complement the MICE sector by providing additional attractions for conference delegates and business travelers.
KICC’s Commitment to Expanding MICE Tourism
KICC Chief Executive Officer, James Mwaura, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that Uasin Gishu will now have the capability to bid for and host major MICE events.
He emphasized that this move will unlock new economic opportunities, enhance business linkages, and increase revenue generation for the county.
“This MOU marks a significant milestone for Uasin Gishu County, positioning it to become a key player in Kenya’s growing MICE sector and driving long-term economic benefits,” Mwaura noted.
The signing ceremony was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, the hospitality industry, and the Jua Kali sector.
Senior county officials were also present, underscoring the importance of the initiative in the county’s economic agenda.
The collaboration between Uasin Gishu and KICC signals a new era for the county’s tourism and investment landscape.
By capitalizing on the opportunities presented by the MICE sector, Uasin Gishu is poised to attract high-value tourism, strengthen its economic foundation, and create a sustainable model for long-term growth.
