•Port of Mombasa Welcomes Two Luxury Liners, Signaling Growth in Kenya’s Cruise Tourism Sector
Mombasa’s economy and tourism industry are set for a significant boost as the Port of Mombasa welcomes two renowned cruise ships, MV World Odyssey and MS Europa.
The arrival of these luxury liners, carrying a combined total of 1,600 passengers, underscores the region’s growing appeal as a premier cruise destination and highlights Kenya’s commitment to expanding its tourism sector.
The influx of international visitors is expected to inject millions into the local economy, benefiting sectors such as hospitality, transportation, retail, and cultural tourism.
With passengers exploring Mombasa’s historic sites, indulging in local cuisine, and embarking on excursions to nearby national parks, the economic ripple effect will be felt across various industries.
A Symbol of Growth in Cruise Tourism
The MV World Odyssey, widely recognized as the world’s largest floating university, is making its fourth call to Mombasa in just three years.
Known as the ‘Semester at Sea,’ the ship carries 677 students and 178 crew members, many of whom engage in educational and volunteering activities that positively impact the local community.
On the other hand, MS Europa, one of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships, is carrying 334 passengers and 285 crew members.
The vessel’s visit to Mombasa marks a significant milestone, as it returns after a decade-long hiatus, having last docked in Kenya ten years ago.
According to the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the arrival of these vessels signals international confidence in Kenya’s cruise infrastructure and security.
KPA Managing Director, Captain William Ruto, emphasized that cruise tourism plays a pivotal role in boosting the country’s image as a secure and attractive tourist destination.
“For cruise ships to choose Kenya, it demonstrates that we are a safe and desirable country for tourism,” said Captain Ruto. “This is the result of ongoing efforts to promote peace, security, and tourism in Kenya.”

Upcoming Cruise Arrivals and Investment in Infrastructure
In a further indication of Mombasa’s growing reputation as a cruise hub, one of the world’s largest passenger ships, carrying 2,000 tourists, is expected to dock at the port next week.
To accommodate the increasing number of cruise liners, KPA has made substantial investments in infrastructure, including modernized terminals, improved safety measures, and sustainable practices.
The port’s state-of-the-art, eco-friendly cruise terminal is a prime example of Kenya’s commitment to elevating cruise tourism standards.
“We continue to market Mombasa as a cruise destination while investing in world-class facilities to attract more ships,” Ruto noted. “Our goal is to position Kenya as the leading cruise hub in the region by ensuring that both Mombasa and Lamu ports meet international standards.”
The managing director extended gratitude to all stakeholders and partners who have contributed to the growth of cruise tourism in Kenya.
He particularly acknowledged the continued partnership with MS Europa and MV World Odyssey, expressing optimism for future visits.
Mombasa: A Gateway to Authentic African Safaris
The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has also welcomed the increasing number of cruise ships docking in Mombasa, recognizing the economic opportunities they bring.
“We are thrilled that Mombasa is a port of call for these international liners,” said KTB’s Wausi Walya. “The presence of these ships translates directly to economic benefits, as tourists spend money on local services, accommodations, and experiences.”
MS Europa’s Captain, Dag Dvergastein, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing Mombasa’s appeal as the gateway to authentic African safaris.
Many passengers from both ships have embarked on excursions to iconic Kenyan wildlife reserves, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a leading safari destination.
Kenya’s Cruise Tourism on an Upward Trajectory
Cruise tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments of the global travel industry, and Kenya is positioning itself as a key player in this market.
As KPA and tourism stakeholders continue to enhance the country’s cruise facilities, the future looks promising for Mombasa’s cruise tourism industry.
With ongoing improvements in infrastructure, security, and marketing, Kenya is on track to becoming a major hub for international cruise liners, attracting more tourists and driving sustainable economic growth for the Coast region.
