Vihiga County has launched a new initiative to strengthen healthcare access by constructing a modern health facility in the Emmukunzi area of Central Bunyore Ward, Emuhaya Sub-County.
This project aims to provide critical medical services to over 5,000 residents in the region, reinforcing the county government’s commitment to quality healthcare at the grassroots level.
Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, who presided over the foundation-laying ceremony, underscored the significance of the new facility, emphasizing that healthcare remains a top priority in his administration.
He reiterated his government’s dedication to investing heavily in both infrastructure and human resources to enhance service delivery.
“This facility will be instrumental in bridging the healthcare gap by offering outpatient services, immunization, laboratory diagnostics, and maternal and child healthcare. Our goal is to ensure that no resident is left behind when it comes to accessing quality medical services,” Dr. Ottichilo stated.
Call for Registration with Social Health Authority (SHA)
Speaking at the event, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, Julius Maruja, urged residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to benefit from seamless access to accredited hospitals across the county.
While acknowledging that the SHA system has faced initial challenges, Maruja assured residents that these issues are being addressed progressively, and the system will soon operate smoothly.
“Enrolling with SHA remains the most effective way of ensuring healthcare security for individuals, households, and the community at large,” he noted.
Commitment to Strengthening Healthcare Systems
The construction of the Emmukunzi Health Centre aligns with Vihiga County’s broader strategy to expand and improve medical infrastructure, ensuring that residents, especially those in rural areas, receive timely and efficient healthcare services.
The initiative is part of a series of interventions aimed at reducing congestion in existing hospitals, improving maternal health outcomes, and enhancing overall public health in the county.
As Vihiga County continues to implement healthcare reforms, local leaders have pledged to work collaboratively with the national government, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders to realize the vision of universal health coverage for all residents.
