Isiolo Rising|How Governor Guyo Is Rewriting Isiolo’s Story of Neglect

2 minutes, 26 seconds Read

For decades, the name Isiolo was mentioned only in conversations about failure. It was a county that had grown painfully accustomed to occupying the bottom positions in nearly every development ranking.

From health outcomes to water access, from education quality to fiscal management, Isiolo seemed trapped in a cycle of low expectations and overlooked potential.

But history has a remarkable way of changing course when visionary leadership finally arrives. Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo assumed office in late August 2022, and what has followed is nothing short of a transformation.

The narrative is shifting. The perception of Isiolo across Kenya is slowly evolving from pity to respect, from neglect to hope.

Governor Guyo did not waste time with empty ceremonies. He immediately set upon implementing his ambitious manifesto with a clarity rarely seen in county governance.

His priorities were simple yet profound: water, health, education, and jobs. These were not campaign slogans. They became measurable targets.

Take water, the most basic currency of life in northern Kenya. The administration has sunk seventy seven(77) boreholes across the county.

Sixty one(61) boreholes are fully funded by the county government, with an additional sixteen(16) completed through development partners. For communities that once walked hours for muddy water, this is not just development. It is liberation.

In health, the evidence is equally compelling. The Isiolo County Teaching and Referral Hospital now houses five renal machines, a modern 128 slice CT scanner, a fully operational cardiology clinic, and a revamped oxygen plant.

Hundreds of nurses and clinical officers have been recruited. A mother no longer fears traveling to Meru or Nairobi for basic emergency care. That is the Governor Guyo effect.

Education has received similar attention. Governor Guyo understands that the devolved government’s greatest power lies in the early years.

New ECDE classrooms have been built and equipped. Eighty ECDE teachers have been employed, with another 119 recruitment letters already issued.

Digital learning has been introduced in 142 centers. Thousands of children now receive quality early education that prepares them for life, not just for examinations.

The youth have not been forgotten. Vocational training centers like the one in Merti have seen enrollment jump from twenty to eighty three students. Skills training is creating a generation that can build Isiolo rather than flee from it.

Yes, there have been false starts and challenges. No administration is perfect. But the value addition to the local community is undeniable. The people have noticed.

Recent surveys place Governor Guyo with a staggering ninety percent approval rating, ranking him second nationally according to Ipsos. A separate TIFA poll confirms seventy eight percent approval.

Those numbers do not lie. They are the voice of a population that sees their county rising. Governor Guyo is not merely managing Isiolo.

He is rewriting its story, page by page, borehole by borehole, classroom by classroom. For the first time in memory, Isiolo is no longer asking when help will arrive. It is becoming the help.
