The County Assembly of Isiolo has strongly condemned the recent shooting of Burat Member of County Assembly (MCA) Nicholas Lorot, calling for urgent government intervention to ensure the security of elected leaders.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening in Isiolo town, has intensified concerns over the safety of MCAs across the country.

Appeal for Government Protection

Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana has urged President William Ruto to take immediate steps to provide security for ward representatives, emphasizing that threats to their lives are escalating.

Citing recent attacks on MCAs in various parts of the country, Godana decried the increasing dangers faced by elected leaders.

“Just the other day in Wajir County, an MCA was abducted and remained missing for months. Today, our colleague Hon. Lorot was shot multiple times, and there is another incident reported in Turkana as well,” Godana stated.

He further described MCAs as an “endangered species,” urging the government to act decisively in protecting them.

“The first and foremost duty of a state is to provide security for its citizens, and I urge the administration of President William Ruto to strongly consider this issue so that MCAs can serve their communities without fear.”

County Assembly’s Official Statement

In an official statement, the County Assembly of Isiolo expressed deep concern over the attack on Lorot, viewing it as an assault on democratic institutions and governance.

The Assembly called on national security agencies to conduct swift investigations and ensure that the perpetrators face justice.

“The County Assembly of Isiolo strongly condemns this act of violence against a democratically elected leader. It is not just an attack on an individual but a direct affront to governance and public service,” the statement read.

Emphasizing the urgency of the matter, the Assembly urged the government to prioritize the security of all public servants, particularly those working in insecure regions.

MCAs often serve in remote and volatile areas, making their protection a critical issue for effective governance.

Call for Calm and Unity

Speaker Mohamed Roba led a delegation of MCAs, including Deputy Speaker David Lemantile (Oldo Nyiro MCA), Abubakar Godana (Sericho MCA), Meja Golicha (Chari MCA), and County Assembly Clerk Salad Boru, in expressing solidarity with the injured legislator.

The leaders visited Lorot’s family and pledged unwavering support in the pursuit of justice.

Lemantile, who was with Lorot when the attack occurred, extended best wishes for his recovery and assured the family that the County Assembly would stand with them. “We will not rest until justice is served,” he vowed.

The MCAs also appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading speculation, urging them to allow the investigative process to proceed without interference.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched a probe into the attack, treating it as a high-priority case.

Meanwhile, Lorot, who underwent surgery to remove bullets, is recovering at a private hospital in Meru, with reports indicating that he is in stable condition.

The County Assembly has committed to covering all his medical expenses, reaffirming their collective support for their wounded colleague.

Growing Security Concerns for MCAs Nationwide

The attack on Lorot is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting MCAs, raising alarms over their safety across the country.

The growing trend of threats, abductions, and attacks has sparked renewed calls for enhanced security measures to protect grassroots leaders.

As investigations continue, the pressure mounts on the government to reinforce security and prevent further attacks on elected representatives.

The Isiolo County Assembly remains resolute in its demand for urgent action, emphasizing that the safety of MCAs is paramount to effective service delivery and governance in Kenya.

Without prompt intervention, the increasing insecurity could have far-reaching consequences on local leadership and the ability of elected officials to serve their constituents without fear.
