Nairobi, Kenya| The Ministry of Health has launched an emergency response to contain an outbreak of Kala-azar in Wajir and Marsabit counties, where 617 cases have been reported, resulting in 25 fatalities over the past three months.

Through the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, the government has mobilized resources to enhance early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the disease.

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni today flagged off three mobile laboratories equipped with molecular testing machines, diagnostic reagents, and personal protective equipment.

These mobile units will facilitate active case finding and prompt treatment in the hardest-hit sub-counties.

Kala-azar, also known as visceral leishmaniasis, is a severe parasitic disease transmitted by sandflies.

It is fatal in over 95% of untreated cases and presents with prolonged fever, weight loss, fatigue, anemia, swollen lymph nodes, and enlargement of the spleen and liver.

Currently, 106 patients are hospitalized in Wajir County, receiving specialized treatment.

Speaking at the flag-off event, PS Muthoni emphasized the critical role of rapid intervention in preventing further loss of life.

“These mobile laboratories will play a crucial role in strengthening our disease surveillance and response efforts. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to controlling this outbreak and safeguarding lives,” she stated.

In addition to deploying mobile laboratories, the Ministry is scaling up hospital capacity by setting up a new ward for incoming patients, supplying emergency medical commodities, and conducting mass fumigation in affected areas.

Medical personnel have confirmed that most patients are responding well to treatment.

The national government has also committed to releasing additional funds through the National Treasury to support disease containment efforts, particularly in Wajir County, where healthcare facilities are struggling with the rising caseload.

The Ministry of Health is working closely with county health departments to ensure adequate resources are available for patient management and vector control.

Health officials have warned that the situation could deteriorate if residents do not seek medical attention promptly.

The PS urged community members to remain vigilant and take preventive measures such as wearing long-sleeved clothing, using insect repellents, and sleeping under insecticide-treated nets.

“The ministry would like to reassure the public that we are deploying comprehensive response measures to combat the situation and prevent further suffering from Kala-azar,” Muthoni affirmed.

Residents in the most affected areas are advised to follow public health advisories and seek medical attention at the nearest health facility if they experience symptoms associated with Kala-azar.

The government remains committed to containing the outbreak and ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected communities.
