Isiolo County witnessed a powerful call for action as InformAction-Kenya, a non-governmental organization, joined key stakeholders and community members to mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
The event saw local communities presenting a petition demanding immediate government intervention to address the escalating cases of gender-based violence (GBV), FGM, and child abuse in the region.
At the heart of their demands was the urgent establishment of a Safe House and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Centre in Isiolo County.
The proposed facility would serve as a shelter for survivors, providing medical care, psychosocial support, and legal assistance while also raising awareness to combat stigma and encourage reporting of GBV cases.
A County in Dire Need of Safe Spaces for Survivors
Despite the increasing cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), FGM, and child abuse, Isiolo County currently lacks a safe haven or recovery center for survivors.
This gap in support services has left many victims vulnerable, often forcing them to remain in unsafe environments or suffer in silence.
Community members and activists at the event emphasized the critical need to empower survivors, enable them to seek justice, and ensure they have a secure space to heal. Among the key demands in the petition were:
- The establishment of a Safe House and GBV Centre to shelter survivors of GBV, FGM, and child abuse.
- Provision of medical care, including post-rape treatment and reproductive health services.
- Psychosocial support, mental health services, and counseling for survivors.
- Awareness campaigns to educate the public, reduce stigma, and encourage reporting of abuse.
- Legal aid and support to ensure justice for survivors.
Empowering Women and Reducing Socioeconomic Barriers
During the event, Issa Ali, an official from Waso Hope CBO, a local non-profit advocating for GBV survivors and women’s empowerment, highlighted the importance of economic support in breaking the cycle of abuse.
“Our aim is to empower women, provide services for GBV survivors, and create awareness about gender equality within Isiolo County.” He highlighted.
Ali also paid tribute to one of their(WasoHope CBO) sponsors: “The financial aid from Haki ni Yetu allows us to reduce the psychosocial burden on GBV survivors and empower women with the skills they need to start generating their own income.”
“This support significantly enhances our ability to make a tangible impact,” Ali reiterated.
Economic empowerment, according to activists, plays a key role in helping survivors rebuild their lives and become independent, reducing their vulnerability to repeated cycles of violence.
InformAction-Kenya Recognized for Advocacy Against FGM

In recognition of its dedication to ending FGM and GBV, InformAction-Kenya was honored during the event for its tireless advocacy efforts.
The organization has been instrumental in raising awareness, supporting survivors, and pushing for policy changes to combat harmful cultural practices.
As the petition awaits response from both the National and Isiolo County Governments, activists and community members remain hopeful that their voices will be heard.
The call for a safe and secure space for survivors is not just a demand but an urgent necessity to protect the most vulnerable and ensure justice and dignity for all.
