•Ex-IEBC Boss Remembered for His Leadership and Electoral Reforms
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is mourning the passing of its former Chairman, Wafula Chebukati, who died earlier today while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
Chebukati, aged 63, served as the chairman of the electoral body for six years, from 2017 to 2023, overseeing two General Elections and a historic repeat presidential election.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms, IEBC Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Marjan Hussein expressed deep sorrow over Chebukati’s demise, describing him as a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in strengthening Kenya’s electoral processes.
A Legacy of Electoral Leadership
Chebukati took over as IEBC chairman in January 2017, a period marked by high political tensions and electoral reforms.
Under his leadership, the Commission conducted the 2017 General Election, which culminated in an unprecedented Supreme Court ruling that annulled the presidential results and ordered a fresh election.
Despite facing immense pressure and scrutiny, Chebukati steered the Commission through the repeat presidential poll in October 2017.
In 2022, he once again led the Commission in managing the General Election, where he was praised for his steadfast commitment to transparency and accountability, even amid political turmoil.
His tenure was characterized by significant electoral advancements, including the introduction of technology-driven voting and results transmission systems aimed at enhancing credibility and efficiency.

Recognized for Excellence
Chebukati’s contributions to Kenya’s electoral democracy were recognized internationally.
His leadership saw IEBC win the prestigious Election Management Award and secure the runner-up position in the Electoral Ergonomic Award during the 19th International Electoral Awards held in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2023.
These accolades underscored the Commission’s commitment to upholding democratic principles under his stewardship.
Fondly Remembered by IEBC
Marjan Hussein described the late chairman as a leader with a remarkable sense of humor, a keen listener, and a man deeply aware of the sensitivity of his office.
“The Commission recounts, along with the rest of Kenyans, the good memories and acknowledges the impact that Chairman Chebukati had as he diligently served his office,” he stated.

The IEBC CEO extended heartfelt condolences to Chebukati’s family, assuring them of the Commission’s unwavering support during this difficult time.
“We hold his family close in our thoughts and pray that God grants them the strength to endure this loss,” he added.
As Kenya comes to terms with the passing of a man who played a crucial role in shaping the country’s electoral landscape, his legacy as a steadfast and principled election official remains firmly etched in the nation’s history.
