The Kenyan government has affirmed that construction and renovation works at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County and Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma County are progressing well, with both facilities set to serve as venues for the highly anticipated African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.

Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, recently toured Bukhungu Stadium alongside Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa to assess the progress of the ongoing construction.

During the visit, the CS expressed satisfaction with the work done so far, assuring the public that the government is committed to ensuring the stadium meets international football standards as required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

“Apart from Bukhungu, we have Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, Bungoma, which is 90% complete, and we are currently installing 10,000 seats to enhance its capacity,” said Mvurya.

He emphasized that both stadiums are among the flagship sports infrastructure projects in the region, critical to talent development and sports promotion in Western Kenya.

Government’s Commitment to Timely Completion

The CS further reassured stakeholders that the government would conduct regular reviews of Bukhungu Stadium’s construction to ensure that all CAF requirements are met ahead of AFCON 2027.

He reiterated President William Ruto’s directive that the facility be completed by June 2027, well in time for the continental football tournament.

Governor Barasa also voiced confidence in the quality and pace of the construction work, stating that the county government is working closely with national authorities to transform Bukhungu into a world-class sports venue.

“We are taking all necessary measures to ensure that this stadium meets the strict requirements set by CAF for hosting such a prestigious event,” Barasa affirmed.

He further emphasized that the stadium would be instrumental in nurturing local talent, fostering youth development, and positioning Western Kenya as a major sporting hub in the country.
