Olympic champion sets sights on major competitions after maternity break and career commitments
Renowned Kenyan long-distance runner and four-time Olympic champion Mercy Cherono is making a determined comeback to competitive athletics after a two-year break, during which she focused on family and professional responsibilities.
The accomplished athlete, who has been a dominant force in track and cross-country events, has assured her fans that she is back and ready to reclaim her place at the top.
Cherono, who hails from Kericho County, took time off in 2023 for maternity leave and later pursued studies at Kiganjo Police Training College as part of her duties as a National Police officer.
However, her passion for running remains unwavering, and she has now set her sights on both local and international competitions in the 2024/2025 athletics season.
A Decorated Career and a Steely Resolve
Cherono’s name is etched in the annals of Kenyan athletics, having secured multiple titles over the years.
She is a two-time World Junior Champion in the 3,000 meters (2008 and 2010) and clinched gold medals at the 2010 World Youth Championships and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Her prowess extends beyond track events, with silver medals in the 2009 World Cross Country Championships and the 2010 World Junior Championships.
Despite her time away from competitive athletics, the 34-year-old has been steadily working her way back to top form.
She has already participated in several local competitions, including the National Police Cross-Country Championships in Ngong, where she finished eighth, as well as the Kericho Betika Cross Country and the Bingwafest in Eldoret towards the end of 2024.
Overcoming Challenges to Return to the Track
Speaking to the Kenya News Agency (KNA) at the Kericho Teachers Training Grounds, where she was engaged in an intense speed-work session with upcoming athletes, Cherono expressed confidence in her progress.
“Running is my passion, and I will not get tired. I appreciate my fans who have been following my journey. For those asking if I am still running, the answer is yes! I am committed to giving my best this season,” she affirmed.
Cherono acknowledged that returning to competition after childbirth has not been easy, noting that the transition required immense discipline, both physically and mentally.
“After maternity leave, shedding weight and regaining top form is a gradual process. It is not something you can achieve in a single day. However, I have remained focused, and I am happy with my progress so far,” she added.
Eyes Set on Road Races and World Athletics Events
With her training regimen in full swing, Cherono has now turned her focus to upcoming road races and track events outlined in the Athletics Kenya (AK) and World Athletics calendar for the 2024/2025 season.
Her goal is to not only regain her competitive edge but also to bring home more medals for Kenya.
Her return adds excitement to Kenya’s athletics scene, as fans eagerly anticipate seeing her compete against the world’s best once again.
Given her track record of resilience and excellence, Cherono’s comeback promises to be nothing short of spectacular.
