As the African Union Commission (AUC) elections approach, Kenya has reinforced its steadfast commitment to the candidacy of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the Chairmanship.
With the elections scheduled for February 15 and 16, the Kenyan government has intensified diplomatic efforts to secure Odinga’s victory, positioning him as the ideal candidate to lead the AU into a new era of unity, economic growth, and institutional efficiency.
A Robust Continental Campaign
Over the past few months, Raila Odinga has embarked on a vigorous and strategic campaign, directly engaging with over 40 African Heads of State.
His candidacy has garnered widespread backing across the continent, with endorsements from the East African Community (EAC), Pan-African allies, and friends of Kenya.
These endorsements reflect a growing confidence in Odinga’s ability to provide visionary leadership and drive critical reforms within the AU.
The Government of Kenya, under the leadership of President William Ruto, has played a crucial role in mobilizing support for Odinga’s bid.
President Ruto, who serves as the AU Champion on Institutional Reforms, has emphasized that an Odinga-led AUC would align with and reinforce ongoing efforts to restructure and strengthen the continental body.
Government’s Commitment and Citizen Solidarity
Speaking in a press statement, Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura reaffirmed Kenya’s full engagement in ensuring Odinga’s success.
He emphasized that the government remains committed to rallying diplomatic backing, ensuring a smooth and strategic path for Odinga’s election.
Beyond government efforts, the bid has sparked a rare display of national unity and patriotism among Kenyans.
Thousands of Kenyan citizens, including members of the diaspora in Ethiopia, have voluntarily traveled to Addis Ababa to express their solidarity with Odinga.
According to Dr. Mwaura, this massive show of support embodies the Kenyan spirit of “uzalendo”—patriotism, peace, and unity—as enshrined in the country’s national anthem.
“The government reaffirms that Kenya’s official delegation remains standard-sized, in accordance with diplomatic protocols,” Dr. Mwaura clarified.
“Any other Kenyan present in Addis Ababa has traveled at their own expense, driven by their unwavering belief in Mr. Odinga’s leadership.”
A Candidacy Rooted in Experience and Vision
Kenya’s confidence in Odinga’s bid is anchored in his extensive experience and strong Pan-African credentials.
As a long-time statesman with a deep understanding of African affairs, Odinga is seen as a transformative leader capable of navigating the complexities of continental politics.
His vision for the AUC includes strengthening economic integration, enhancing peace and security mechanisms, and making the AU more responsive to the needs of its citizens.
With the election just days away, Kenya remains optimistic that Odinga’s track record and commitment to African unity will resonate with AU member states.
His leadership, supporters argue, presents an opportunity to revitalize the African Union, ensuring it remains a strong, people-centered institution capable of addressing Africa’s pressing challenges.
As the race for the AUC chairmanship reaches its final stretch, all eyes are on Addis Ababa, where the outcome will not only shape the future of the AU but also reaffirm Africa’s commitment to visionary leadership and progressive governance.
