Burkina Faso has made a historic leap in sustainable transportation with the launch of Itaoua, the country’s first-ever electric vehicle (EV) brand.
Named after a village in Tanghin-Dassouri, Kadiogo Province, Itaoua represents a bold step towards modernizing the nation’s automotive industry while embracing environmental sustainability.
This groundbreaking initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between a Chinese automobile manufacturer and local Burkinabè investors.
As part of the plan, an assembly plant is set to be established in Ouagadougou, aiming to position Burkina Faso as a player in Africa’s growing electric vehicle sector.
A Vision for Sustainability and Economic Growth
The Itaoua electric car is 100% battery-powered, in line with global efforts to transition away from fossil fuels.
This shift not only supports sustainable energy solutions but also aligns with Burkina Faso’s broader development agenda.
The initiative falls within President Ibrahim Traoré’s vision to strengthen African identity by renaming and rebranding products and services with indigenous names, reinforcing national pride and cultural heritage.
Currently, the vehicles are manufactured in China and imported for sale in Burkina Faso.
However, there are ambitious plans to relocate full-scale production to Burkina Faso, allowing for local manufacturing from scratch.
Once operational, this move is expected to bring numerous economic benefits, including:
- Job Creation: The establishment of a local assembly plant will provide employment opportunities for engineers, technicians, and factory workers.
- Economic Stimulation: A domestic EV industry could spur growth in related sectors, such as battery production, charging infrastructure, and parts supply chains.
- Reduced Import Dependence: Manufacturing Itaoua vehicles locally will help reduce reliance on foreign imports, lower costs, and improve accessibility for Burkinabè consumers.
Paving the Way for a Greener Future
The launch of Itaoua marks a significant milestone in Burkina Faso’s automotive sector, setting the stage for a more sustainable and self-reliant industry.

As the world shifts towards clean energy solutions, Burkina Faso’s adoption of electric vehicles demonstrates its commitment to innovation, economic progress, and environmental responsibility.
With the anticipated establishment of the Ouagadougou assembly plant, Itaoua could become a catalyst for a broader transformation in West Africa’s auto industry.
The initiative not only promotes clean mobility but also showcases Burkina Faso’s potential to develop homegrown industrial capacity in cutting-edge technologies.
As the country takes its first steps into the electric vehicle market, all eyes will be on Itaoua to see how this pioneering venture unfolds, shaping the future of transportation in Burkina Faso and beyond.
