Isiolo County leadership today joined hands in the fight against land compensation injustice following displacement by the proposed construction of Horn of Africa Gateway development project.
Compensation for land parcels after acquisition by the National Government for purposes of public projects has been a lengthy process that is often contentious and characterized by several grievances raised by those affected.
The leaders who were led by Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo accused the National Land Commission for shortchanging the locals and offering peanuts.
The leaders Isiolo North M.P Hon. Samal Lomwa, Isiolo South M.P Hon.Mohamed Tupi, Women Rep. Mumina Gollo, Senator Hon. Fatuma Dullo, Isiolo County Assembly Speaker Mohamed Roba Qoto, Majority Leader and area MCAs vowed to stay firm and ensure justice for the locals.
The Leaders accompanied by team of experts led by Sophie of Natural Justice a consortium of Legal experts representative of Communities with intent to determine the legitimate grevience and make a report to the National Lands Commission for consideration visited several areas boji, Kulamawe, Garbatulla and Modogashe.
The County Secretary Mr. Dhadde Boru and Deputy County Commissioner were part of the entourage on the trip that spent the day collecting specific grivience of the Communities in concerns of the Compensation for affected families.
The Sophie Adhiambo team, that also included Hilda Joy and Dale Onyango with the help of the Senator, was able to collect grievience ranging from under-valuation, absence of public participation, bullying into submission, refusal to compensate undeveloped plots among other things.
” I am grateful to our leaders, we all united to pursue this cause and we will ensure our people get what is rightfully theirs,” said the Governor
He further reiterated that the compensation be calculated within the stimulated standards.
Meanwhile, the Governor also launched relief food meant to cater for 12,000 families affected by drought. Each household will receive 5kgs Rice, 8 Kgs Ugali and one liter of cooking oil.
