President William Samoei Ruto led Kenyans in marking the 59th Jamhuri Day celebrations, the first of his administration. The president arrived at the Nyayo National Stadium shortly after 11AM where he inspected a guard of honour and later delivered his keynote address.
This years event was dedicated to a theme of innovation and ICT, a first time that a National Public Holiday has adopted such a theme pointing to changing times and Dr. Ruto’s mission of entrenching the digital economy in the nation’s conscience.
Emphasizing the choice of the theme, President Ruto reiterated his firm position in pushing for innovation. The president took to his social media and posted the message below:
“The first national day celebration dedicated to a theme that is relevant to our national aspirations-Tech and Innovation. The promise of innovation is to enable us connect, innovate and inspire.”
Dr. Ruto further touted his administration’s achievements noting the strengthening of the judiciary and the overhaul of the National Police Service.
The president has also reassured his ‘hustler’ base that the government is ‘on course’ in implementing a raft of policies aimed at uplifting the underprivileged Kenyans.
He also touted the provision offordable credit to businesses and the reduction of the cost of farm inputs to enhance production.
The president expressed his satisfaction with the progress made on the Hustler Fund, calling it an ‘anchor of the Bottom-Up Economic Plan’ that he says ‘seeks to stimulate entrepreneurship in the country’.
“As of this morning, the fund had disbursed sh 7.5 billion. At the same time, 15.4 million Kenyans had registered on the platform,” the president asserted.
The celebrations were preceded by an Innovation Week that had attracted global technology firms who reportedly agreed to work with the government to ‘nurture the youth and create opportunities for them,’ said an unidentified tech investor who attended the innovation extravaganza.
President Ruto added that his administration is ready to engage the private sector and other stakeholders in creating more opportunities for the young people.
“We have agreed on partnerships to support local firms in providing opportunities for young Kenyans to acquire training and skills on the various aspects of digital productivity,” asserted Dr. Ruto.
Present at the event were Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Cabinet Secretaries, Governors,a host of MPs and foreign dignitaries including a number of high commissioners and ambassadors.
