Addis Ababa, Ethiopia|Hawi Matios emerged victorious to become the new Miss Tourism Oromia from a bevy of outstandingly beautiful damsels. She becomes the second ever to hold the title which was previously held by Halima Abdulshakur who won the inaugural Miss Tourism Oromia title in 2021 and successfully steered the organization achieving numerous milestones and setting the standard for her successors.
The ambassadorial title comes with a major responsibility of ensuring the Oromia region is well represented on the map when it comes to attracting tourists to explore the beauty of the Oromia region and its choice as a top tourism market with various tourist attractions that is splattered all over the Southern Ethiopia region.
Hawi Matios seems very much equal to the task going by the details that we have gathered on her so far.
She was born in Gidami, Qellam, Wollega but grew up in Addis Ababa. “We migrated to Addis Ababa a year after I was born which is where I lived and studied till I finished 12th grade,” Ms Matios told BBC Afaan Oromo.
After completing 12th grade, she went on to Jimma University where she graduated with honours earning her a scholarship to study pharmacy in an Indian university for four years returning to Ethiopia in 2021(E.C 2016). she has authored a full research document alongside three others on Antiurolithiatic of Brassica aloreci var capitata linn.
Back home, she got employed by a local pharmaceutical company based in Addis Ababa.
While in India, Hawi learnt how to speak the indian language which she understands sufficiently and can fluently converse in it.
In addition to that, she is also fluent in Afaan Oromo, Amharic and the English language. She also has some knowledge in the Korean language and can understand it well despite not being able to converse in it yet.
Multi-linguality is one of the most important aspects of tourism as it often deals with communicating in languages other than ones native language in order to adequately market the region to other far-flung overseas communities and societies.
Her predecessor, Ms. Abdulshakur speaks is credited with speaking more than 5 languages fluently and Hawwi, who speaks more than four languages fluently, in addition to her qualification as a pharmacist hasn’t fared so badly either.
We wish her all the best as she begins her maiden voyage into the tourism world.
