Baku, Azerbaijan| In a historic diplomatic engagement, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr Ilham Aliyev, met today in Baku to sign a series of key agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two nations.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, with particular emphasis on education, energy, security, and governance.
The leaders underscored their commitment to fostering mutual collaboration across these critical sectors.
Education and Research Partnerships
As part of the agreements, Somalia and Azerbaijan have pledged to deepen their educational ties, including the provision of scholarships for Somali students to study in Azerbaijan.
Additionally, both nations will work together to advance scientific research and innovation, promoting knowledge exchange between academic institutions.
Energy and Infrastructure Development
Recognising the importance of energy cooperation, Azerbaijan has committed to supporting Somalia in developing its oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors.
This includes knowledge-sharing initiatives and potential investments to help Somalia tap into its natural resources and build a more sustainable energy infrastructure.
Security and Defence Collaboration
In the realm of security and defence, both countries agreed to enhance military training programs, boost cooperation in counterterrorism efforts, and strengthen Somalia’s security institutions.
The agreement also covers modernisation efforts aimed at improving public administration and governance, ensuring more efficient service delivery to Somali citizens.
A Permanent Platform for Continued Engagement
To ensure the successful implementation of these agreements, the two leaders proposed the establishment of a permanent diplomatic forum dedicated to monitoring and strengthening their bilateral partnership.
This platform will facilitate ongoing dialogue and cooperation across multiple sectors.
Invitation for Further Engagement
Concluding the discussions, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud extended an official invitation to President Ilham Aliyev to visit Somalia.
The visit aims to further cement the growing partnership and explore additional avenues for collaboration.
