A political storm is brewing along the Kenya-Ethiopia border as leaders from Marsabit County forcefully challenge their Wajir counterparts over the establishment of a new multi-agency security installation in Basir. The facility, which has yet to be officially gazetted, is now at the center of a fierce dispute over legality, transparency, and regional stability.
Led by Saku MP Dido Raso and Moyale MP Professor Guyo Jaldesa, the Marsabit delegation has condemned the project as an unlawful and unilateral move. They argue that no consultations were held with Marsabit leaders, local communities, or the relevant administrative authorities before construction began. This lack of due process, they warn, not only violates constitutional requirements but also threatens to ignite tensions in an already sensitive border area.
The two lawmakers emphasized that any security infrastructure built within contested or poorly defined boundaries must follow inclusive engagement and clear inter-county coordination. Without such measures, they said, even well-intended projects risk deepening mistrust between neighboring communities.
In a firm and unified response, the Marsabit leaders have demanded the immediate suspension of all construction activities at the Basir site. They insist that the project be halted entirely until a thorough legal and administrative review is completed. Furthermore, they called on national government agencies to step in and ensure that all developments strictly adhere to the law and respect established governance structures.
The controversy has now placed Wajir’s leadership under growing scrutiny. Pressure is mounting for accountability and a resolution that prioritizes dialogue, legality, and long-term regional stability. As the standoff intensifies, many eyes are on the national government to mediate a dispute that could have serious implications for security and cohesion along the border.
