Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan(Guyo) has sharply criticized a recent demolition exercise conducted by security officers in Checheles, Isiolo County, terming it inhumane, illegal, and a betrayal of the government’s duty to protect its citizens.

The demolitions, carried out early Saturday morning under the supervision of the Isiolo Officer Commanding Station (OCS), left several families homeless and sparked public outrage.

The evictions were reportedly enforced on behalf of a private individual claiming ownership of the contested land.

Police officers escorted a bulldozer that razed multiple homes, including the residence of Mr. Nura, a former County Chief Officer for Gender and Social Services.

Governor Hassan, who visited the site shortly after the demolitions, decried the actions of the security officers, accusing them of siding with a land speculator allegedly in possession of a fraudulent title deed and a court injunction used to facilitate the evictions.

He questioned the legitimacy of the eviction process and demanded accountability from the police.

“The County Government is the custodian of all land in Isiolo. We will not stand by as unscrupulous individuals, aided by rogue security personnel, destroy the homes and livelihoods of innocent citizens,” said Governor Hassan.

“It is unacceptable that government firearms and resources are being used to terrorize the very people they are meant to protect.”

The Governor emphasized that no demolition should occur without thorough legal scrutiny, community engagement, and the involvement of relevant government stakeholders.

He called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident and vowed to protect residents from unlawful displacement.

In a gesture of solidarity, Governor Hassan pledged to personally fund the construction of a new home for one of the displaced elderly women.

He also announced plans to organize a community harambee (fundraiser) to assist all affected families in rebuilding their lives and recovering from the loss.

“This is a matter of justice and dignity. What happened here reflects a breakdown in governance and oversight, which we must correct immediately,” he asserted.

Following the site visit, the Governor held a meeting with the Isiolo Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD), where it was agreed that no further demolitions would proceed without adherence to proper legal procedures.

He stressed the importance of involving the provincial administration, local elders, and both the complainant and accused parties in any land dispute resolutions.

Many of the displaced families, now homeless, have sought temporary refuge in a nearby mosque as they await support from the county government and well-wishers.

Governor Hassan concluded his statement with a strong call for justice, vowing to pursue all legal avenues to ensure that the affected residents are protected, compensated, and their rights restored.

He also urged law enforcement agencies to prioritize the protection of public welfare over the interests of private entities operating in bad faith.
