Isiolo, Kenya| In a significant blow to suspected narcotics trafficking networks, a multi-agency security team intercepted a long-haul truck transporting a substantial quantity of cannabis along the Moyale-Isiolo highway, leading to the arrest of four individuals.
The truck, which was reportedly en route from the northern frontier, was stopped during a routine operation along the busy highway.
Upon inspection, security officers discovered several gunny bags stuffed with tightly packed bales of bhang (cannabis), each bundle meticulously wrapped in yellow cellotape to evade detection.
The illicit cargo had been ingeniously concealed within the truck’s chassis in what authorities describe as a well-orchestrated smuggling operation.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Boniface Nthenge Kithuku, who was driving the vehicle, along with three other occupants: Amos Murithi, Justus Mutisya Mutia, and Titus Nthenge Kituu. All four were apprehended at the scene without resistance.
The vehicle, along with the contraband, was escorted to Isiolo Police Station, where the suspects are currently in custody.
Authorities have launched an intensive investigation to determine the origin, intended destination, and possible network behind the attempted trafficking.
Preliminary reports suggest the operation may be linked to a broader regional syndicate exploiting the strategic northern corridor for drug transportation.
Police sources indicate that the suspects will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, the incident has raised renewed concerns over the increasing use of major highways as transit routes for narcotics, prompting calls for heightened surveillance and intelligence-led policing across key transport corridors.
The Moyale-Isiolo highway, a vital trade route connecting Kenya to Ethiopia, has in recent years become a hotspot for drug and contraband trafficking, underscoring the challenges law enforcement agencies face in curbing organized crime in the region.
Security agencies have reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
