North-Eastern Female MPs in Physical Altercation at Parliament Grounds

3 minutes, 46 seconds Read

A dramatic confrontation unfolded at the National Assembly grounds in Nairobi involving two Somali female lawmakers — ODM-nominated MP Umulkheir Harun Mohamed and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Falhada Dekow Iman — who were captured on video engaging in a physical fight in full public view.

The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, has ignited a storm of reactions from Kenyans and the wider Somali community, with many expressing concern over the conduct of elected leaders and the implications for public trust in the legislative institution.

Alleged Political Undercurrents Behind the Altercation

Although the exact cause of the altercation remains unclear, sources close to both parties suggest that political tensions tied to Garissa County may have played a central role.

The two MPs are reportedly at loggerheads over Umulkheir’s vocal criticism of Garissa Senator Abdul Haji, a position that may have sparked friction with Falhada, who is believed to be an ally of the senator.

Further raising questions is Falhada Iman’s presence at the National Assembly, given that EALA members are based at the Arusha headquarters and not mandated to attend local parliamentary proceedings.

Her visit has drawn scrutiny, with some alleging that it was deliberately confrontational.

The Video and Reactions in Parliament

The now-widely shared video shows the two MPs being physically separated by fellow female legislators, with nearby male MPs heard discouraging each other from intervening.

Order was eventually restored when an individual in a Sergeant-at-Arms uniform stepped in to end the scuffle.

It is yet to be confirmed whether either MP sustained injuries or filed a police report regarding the incident.

Statements and Public Apologies

In the aftermath, Umulkheir Harun Mohamed issued a statement acknowledging and expressing regret over the incident.

In a reflective tone, she distanced herself from initiating the fight while emphasizing the importance of maintaining decorum in public office:

“Today, an unfortunate incident occurred on the parliamentary grounds — a situation I deeply regret, both as a Member of Parliament and as a mother. My colleague from the EALA, who has expressed longstanding differences with my work, acted in a manner that I find unacceptable… I do not endorse or encourage any form of misconduct.”

She went on to urge for a more respectful and constructive political environment, highlighting her commitment to upholding the values of leadership, especially as a Muslim woman in public service.

Falhada Dekow Iman, in contrast, has not issued a direct statement but posted a cryptic message on her Facebook page alongside her photo, stating:

“It takes nothing to join the crowd. It takes everything to stand alone. Good evening.”

She also disabled comments on the post, preventing public feedback on her side of the story.

Public Reaction: Support, Criticism, and Concern

Online reactions have been swift, with users split between supporting Umulkheir, criticizing Falhada, or condemning both for unbecoming conduct in a national institution.

Ayu Pro, a social media user, decried the incident as an “attack on the dignity of Somali women,” while Traxlow Poqorow praised Umulkheir for her “tireless dedication” to the marginalized communities of northeastern Kenya, portraying her as a rising star being undermined by an underperforming predecessor.

Others like Prince Hiraam and Qamar Queen suggested the incident was born of jealousy and generational conflict, pointing to Umulkheir’s popularity among youth and her rising political clout.

However, not all reactions were supportive. Some, like Ali Absiye and Osman Adam, urged Umulkheir to exercise restraint, warning that public brawls risk undermining her credibility.

Osman notably remarked on the cultural shame associated with the exposure of her “cawra” (body), a sensitive issue within the Muslim community.

Ahmed Godow Sheikh Abdullahi offered a broader critique, questioning Falhada’s use of social media for personal vendettas instead of focusing on her legislative duties.

He raised concerns over her alleged alliances and questioned her commitment to her role as a public servant.

A Moment of Reckoning for Female Leadership?

This incident has shone a spotlight on the challenges female leaders face, not only in navigating political rivalry but also in maintaining professionalism under pressure.

It also raises important questions about how political disagreements are handled, especially among leaders representing marginalized communities.

While the incident may have been an isolated confrontation, its symbolism and viral spread reflect deeper tensions within the Somali political landscape — including generational rivalries, regional power struggles, and gendered expectations.

As the public awaits further clarification or disciplinary actions from parliamentary authorities, one thing remains clear: the episode has stirred a national conversation about conduct, accountability, and leadership ethics among Kenyan politicians.
