Homa Bay County, Kenya| Ogande Girls High School has emerged as the overall winner of this year’s Nyanza Region Drama Festival, securing their place to represent the region in the upcoming national competition.
The national drama festivals are scheduled to take place in Nakuru from April 6th to 13th.
The school’s drama club clinched the top spot during the regional competitions held over the weekend at Orero Boys High School in Homa Bay County.
Their outstanding performance in cultural dance won them the coveted trophy, solidifying their reputation as one of the leading institutions in performing arts.
Speaking at the school while receiving the trophy, Ogande Girls Principal Jane Odhiambo expressed confidence in their ability to excel at the national level.
She emphasized that the victory had not only boosted the morale of the drama club members but had also motivated the entire school community.
National Victory in Sight
Odhiambo assured that the school would intensify preparations ahead of the national competition, maintaining a strong focus on clinching the national title.
“The eyes of Team Ogande Girls are focused on becoming the national champion in cultural dance this year. We are working hard towards achieving this goal,” she affirmed.
She attributed the school’s success to the collective support of teachers, parents, and non-teaching staff, whose encouragement had played a crucial role in refining the students’ artistic skills.
Boost for Education and Talent Development
The school head further highlighted that the achievement had injected fresh enthusiasm among teachers, particularly in their efforts to implement Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
She noted that participation in drama and other co-curricular activities plays a vital role in talent discovery and nurturing, which aligns with the CBC’s objectives.
“We encourage learners to identify and develop their talents early, and these festivals provide an excellent platform for them to showcase their abilities,” she said.
Beyond their dominance in drama, Ogande Girls also represented Homa Bay County in hockey at the regional secondary school sports games held at St. Joseph’s Rapogi in Migori County.
This, according to the principal, underscores the institution’s commitment to holistic education by balancing academics with extracurricular activities.
Strong Academic Performance
Academically, Ogande Girls has continued to post impressive results. Principal Odhiambo revealed that in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, over 700 candidates attained a mean grade of C+ (plus) and above, qualifying them for direct university admission.
“Our girls have demonstrated great commitment in both academics and co-curricular activities, and we are proud of their achievements,” she noted.
Call for Support Ahead of National Competitions
The Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Homa Bay chapter, led by Orero Boys High School Chief Principal Dickens Bula, commended Ogande Girls for their stellar performance.

Bula urged well-wishers to extend their support to the winning teams from the region to ensure they are well-equipped for the national stage.
“We appeal to well-wishers to come forward and support these talented students so that they can excel at the national level,” he stated.
As Ogande Girls High School prepares to compete at the national festival, expectations are high that they will bring home another victory, further cementing their place as a powerhouse in Kenya’s performing arts scene.
