•Sports for Change: Isiolo Women Representative Leads Anti-Drug Initiative Through Football
Isiolo County has witnessed the launch of a major football tournament championed by Isiolo Women Representative, Mumina Gollo Bonaya, as part of a broader strategy to combat drug and substance abuse among young people.
The MGB Tournament, named after her initials, brings together 33 teams, including two girls’ teams, in a bid to provide an alternative and positive engagement for the youth.
Sports as a Tool for Social Change
The tournament aligns with Bonaya’s commitment to fighting the drug menace that has deeply affected the county.
Her efforts recently led to the successful establishment of a National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) office in Isiolo, a move she strongly advocated for to help curb the rising cases of substance abuse.
Speaking during the launch, Bonaya emphasized the critical role of sports in mentorship, rehabilitation, and empowerment.
“In a bid to engage our youth positively, away from the temptations of drug and substance abuse that is prevalent in our county, my office and that of NACADA partnered to sponsor this tournament in Isiolo Central,” she stated.
The tournament, which was officially flagged off by Isiolo Central Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), is expected to culminate in an exciting cup final on Eid Day, a strategic move to harness community engagement during the festive period.
A Community United Against Drug Abuse
The MGB Tournament has drawn massive participation, with residents and players lauding the initiative for its role in keeping the youth engaged.
Many view Bonaya’s leadership as transformative, calling for more such initiatives to divert young people from destructive lifestyles.
By integrating sports into the fight against drug addiction, Bonaya has demonstrated a proactive approach to tackling a social crisis that has plagued many families in Isiolo.
The initiative goes beyond competition—it serves as a platform for mentorship, raising awareness, and providing a structured support system for at-risk youth.
As the tournament unfolds, anticipation is building for thrilling matches and moments of unity, reinforcing the message that community-driven efforts can bring about real change.
With sustained commitment, initiatives like the MGB Tournament could serve as a model for other regions grappling with similar challenges.

A Step Toward a Brighter Future
The fight against drug abuse is far from over, but with leaders like Mumina Bonaya at the forefront, Isiolo’s youth are being offered hope and alternatives.
The success of the tournament will not only be measured in goals scored but also in the lives positively impacted by this bold intervention.
