Nairobi, Kenya| In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, generosity, and inclusivity during the holy month of Ramadhan, Absa Kenya Foundation has expanded its humanitarian support by donating food and essential supplies to vulnerable families across Kenya.
Through its Absa La Riba Banking team, the foundation has committed over KES 4 million to support disadvantaged communities, in addition to its earlier pledge of Sh3 million, bringing the total contribution to Sh7 million.
This initiative, aimed at ensuring that those in need can observe Ramadhan with dignity, will benefit over 800 households, positively impacting more than 2,400 individuals across multiple counties, including Nairobi, Garissa, Kisumu, Isiolo, Bungoma, Eldoret, Murang’a, Kajiado, Oyugis, and Nkurumah.
Commitment to Community Upliftment
During a food donation event held in Kibra, Nairobi, Absa Bank Kenya’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Yusuf Omari, reaffirmed the foundation’s dedication to social impact, emphasizing that Absa remains committed to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable communities, not just during Ramadhan, but beyond.
“We are honoured to be here today to share in the spirit of Ramadhan, which emphasises generosity and compassion. Just as we believe in inclusivity even in our banking solutions, we also believe in uplifting those in need during this period so that they too can break their fast with dignity,” said Omari.
At the Kibra event, Kibera Ramadhan Initiative Chair Mohammed Aman and representatives from the Swabiraat Widows and Orphans Association received food donations from Absa Bank Kenya’s leadership and the La Riba Banking team, further solidifying the foundation’s efforts in providing relief to disadvantaged groups.
Four Pillars of Sustainable Development
The initiative is part of the Absa Kenya Foundation’s broader social development agenda, which operates under four core pillars:
- Entrepreneurship – Supporting small businesses and promoting financial empowerment to strengthen economic resilience.
- Education – Providing scholarships and training opportunities to equip young people with the skills and knowledge for a brighter future.
- Environmental Conservation – Implementing sustainability initiatives, climate action programs, and responsible resource management.
- Humanitarian Support – Offering aid during times of crisis, including emergency relief, disaster assistance, and initiatives such as the Ramadhan food donation drive.
“We have started a foundation that consists of four pillars. The first pillar is entrepreneurship, which is business. The second pillar is education. The third pillar is environmental conservation, and the fourth is humanitarian needs, just like what we are doing here today,” Omari reiterated.
Strengthening Community Bonds Through Iftar Dinners
Beyond food donations, Absa also organized a special Iftar dinner in Nairobi for its La Riba Banking customers and key stakeholders, further demonstrating its commitment to community engagement and religious inclusivity.
“This dinner was a meaningful part of the ongoing Ramadhan activities by the Absa La Riba Banking team, showcasing our dedication to community and connection across the nation,” Omari stated.
During the dinner, Omari reaffirmed Absa’s commitment to providing Shariah-compliant financial solutions that respect and uphold Islamic banking principles.
Absa’s La Riba Banking offers a range of products, including Shari’ah-compliant accounts, investment options, and financing solutions designed to empower both personal and business aspirations.
A Lasting Impact on Communities
Through these Ramadhan initiatives, Absa Kenya Foundation continues to play a crucial role in corporate social responsibility, reinforcing its mission to be a force for good in the community.
The bank’s multi-pronged approach—spanning philanthropy, financial inclusion, and sustainable social development—reflects its long-term vision of empowering Kenya’s most vulnerable populations.
