Major Investment in Healthcare Infrastructure
Kiambu County has taken a major step toward transforming its healthcare system with the unveiling of state-of-the-art medical equipment by Governor Dr. Kimani Wamatangi.
The new machines, which include digital X-ray systems, advanced ultrasound devices, and life-saving dialysis machines, were launched on Tuesday in Thika, marking a significant milestone in the county’s ongoing healthcare improvement efforts.
The medical equipment will be distributed across various hospitals, including those in Githunguri, Thika, Lari, Nyathuna, Lusigetti, Gachororo (Juja), Makongeni (Thika), and Lang’ata (Githurai).
This expansion aims to bring crucial diagnostic and treatment services closer to residents, reducing the need for long and costly travel to Nairobi and other major referral hospitals.
In addition to the newly launched equipment, Governor Wamatangi highlighted that over the past 18 months, dialysis and endoscopy machines have been installed in several hospitals, including Karuri, Tigoni, Igegania, Kigumo (Komothai), Kahara, Ruiru, Thika, and Kiambu.
A Ksh. 2.5 Billion Commitment to Health
Governor Wamatangi outlined his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare services, announcing an ambitious Ksh. 2.5 billion investment in equipping hospitals.
Of this amount, Ksh. 500 million will be used to upgrade medical equipment in existing facilities, while Ksh. 2 billion will go toward equipping six new Level Four hospitals and 26 Level Three hospitals currently under construction.
“Our goal is to make Kiambu County a model for healthcare delivery in Kenya. By equipping our hospitals with modern machines and expanding our facilities, we are not only saving lives but also improving the quality of life for our people,” said Governor Wamatangi.
He also emphasized that his administration has focused on the expansion and refurbishment of hospitals where outdated X-ray machines have been replaced with cutting-edge digital equipment.
The newly introduced digital X-ray machines will enhance diagnostic capabilities, particularly in assessing kidney function, monitoring fetal health, evaluating pancreatic conditions, and detecting prostate cancer.
Kiambu County is now among the few counties in Kenya to have these advanced medical technologies, marking a new era in healthcare accessibility and efficiency.
Transforming Lives with Modern Medical Solutions
For many residents, the arrival of new medical equipment is more than just a technological upgrade—it is a life-changing intervention.
Mary Muthoni, a Ruiru resident undergoing dialysis treatment, shared her relief and joy following the installation of dialysis machines at Ruiru Hospital.
“I have been traveling long distances for my dialysis sessions, which has been both exhausting and expensive. Knowing that I can now receive treatment closer to home is a huge relief,” she said.
“This machine is not just a piece of equipment; it’s a lifeline for people like me.” Her story echoes the experiences of many patients in Kiambu who previously had to seek specialized treatment in distant hospitals, often facing financial and logistical challenges.
The new medical infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce these burdens while easing congestion in referral hospitals.
Kikuyu Level Four Hospital Nears Completion
Another major highlight of Kiambu’s healthcare transformation is the nearing completion of the Kikuyu (Thogoto) Level Four Hospital.
The 160-bed facility, which had been stalled for over seven years since its inception in 2016, was revived in 2023 and is now 95% complete.
Once operational, it will be one of the six Level Four hospitals aimed at increasing healthcare access across the county.
A Vision for a Healthier Kiambu
Governor Wamatangi has positioned healthcare as a top priority in his administration’s development agenda.
With strategic investments in medical infrastructure, the county is setting a precedent for accessible, high-quality healthcare in Kenya.
As Kiambu continues to roll out its ambitious healthcare improvement program, the impact is already being felt by residents.
Stories like Mary Muthoni’s serve as a reminder that investment in healthcare is not just about machines and buildings—it is about transforming lives, restoring dignity, and ensuring that every resident has access to the medical care they need.
With continued efforts and sustained investment, Kiambu County is on its way to becoming a model of excellence in healthcare service delivery.
