•Unlocking Nyandarua’s Tourism Potential: A Collaborative Effort
•Government and Stakeholders Join Hands to Promote Tourism in Nyandarua
Nyandarua County, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and historical significance, is poised to become a major tourist destination in Kenya.
In a bid to unlock its full potential, the national government, through the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, has pledged to work closely with the Nyandarua County Government to boost tourism, enhance economic growth, and promote conservation efforts.
During a high-level tourism stakeholders’ forum in Ol-Kalou, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Rebecca Miano and Nyandarua Governor Dr. Kiarie Badilisha underscored the importance of structured collaboration in harnessing the county’s untapped tourism potential.
The forum brought together government officials, private sector players, and other strategic partners to deliberate on ways to develop and diversify the region’s tourism industry.
A Region of Untapped Tourism Potential
Nyandarua County is home to several iconic attractions, including the Aberdare National Park, Kenya’s only highland lake Lake Ol-Bolosat, and historic landmarks such as the Mau Mau Caves and the Happy Valley Homes.
These sites hold immense historical, ecological, and cultural significance, yet their tourism potential remains largely underutilized.
Cabinet Secretary Miano emphasized the need for greater efforts in promoting and developing these attractions to benefit both local communities and the national economy.
She pointed out that while Kenya welcomed over 2.4 million international visitors last year, domestic tourism still requires substantial growth and diversification.
“There is a need to diversify tourism source markets both locally and internationally. The government aims to partner with counties to map out tourism products, develop them, and promote sector diversification,” Miano stated.
She further challenged the Nyandarua County Government to create comprehensive work plans to implement the forum’s recommendations.
She urged the county leadership to collaborate with the national government, development partners, and other key stakeholders to achieve tangible results.
Nyandarua’s Strategy for Tourism Development
Governor Dr. Kiarie Badilisha reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to positioning tourism as a pillar of Nyandarua’s economic development.
He announced that the county government is in the process of formulating a tourism legal and policy framework to guide activities such as mapping, profiling, product diversification, and investment in the sector.
“We are determined to unlock Nyandarua’s tourism potential and establish it as a unique destination both locally and internationally. Our deliberations with the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, along with key stakeholders, are part of an ongoing partnership aimed at achieving this goal,” said Governor Badilisha.
Among the key sites earmarked for tourism development and promotion are:
- Ol-Kalou Arboretum – A green space for recreation and environmental conservation
- Aberdare National Park – A haven for diverse wildlife and scenic landscapes
- Lake Ol-Bolosat – Kenya’s only highland lake, crucial for birdwatching and ecological balance
- Mau Mau Caves – Historic caves linked to Kenya’s independence struggle
- Happy Valley Homes – Historical remnants of Kenya’s colonial past
- The Equator Line – A geographical marvel that attracts scientific and tourism interest
Governor Badilisha highlighted that part of his administration’s broader vision is to integrate Nyandarua into the sports, historical, and eco-tourism circuits to attract both domestic and international visitors.
A Collaborative Approach for Sustainable Tourism
Recognizing the critical role counties play in driving tourism growth, CS Miano reiterated the importance of seamless collaboration between the two levels of government.
She assured stakeholders that the national government is committed to supporting counties in tourism development initiatives.
“Counties are integral to the success of our tourism sector. For the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife to realize its set targets, there must be strong coordination and cooperation between national and county governments,” Miano stated.
The forum’s discussions align with Kenya’s broader strategy to enhance tourism infrastructure, develop new products, and promote lesser-known destinations beyond traditional tourism hubs like Nairobi and the Coast.
This initiative is expected to create jobs, boost local businesses, and promote sustainable conservation efforts.
The Road Ahead: From Plans to Action
With the groundwork being laid for tourism development in Nyandarua, the success of these initiatives will depend on effective implementation, continued government support, and active stakeholder involvement.
The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, alongside the Nyandarua County Government, has expressed commitment to ensuring that policy frameworks, funding mechanisms, and strategic marketing campaigns are put in place to position Nyandarua as a leading tourist destination.
As Kenya seeks to diversify its tourism offerings, Nyandarua’s vast potential stands as a beacon of opportunity—one that, if fully harnessed, could significantly contribute to both the county’s and the nation’s economic growth.
