Kapenguria, West Pokot| In a move aimed at boosting local trade and supporting small-scale entrepreneurs, West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin has officially commissioned 80 newly constructed stalls at Bendera Market in Kapenguria Ward.
The initiative, which seeks to provide modern and secure trading spaces for vendors, is expected to stimulate economic growth, enhance business opportunities, and create a more vibrant market environment.
Transforming Local Trade and Economic Growth
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Kachapin underscored the strategic significance of the new stalls, emphasizing their role in improving the business environment for traders and consumers alike.
He noted that Bendera Market would serve as a key commercial hub, catering to students, staff, and residents from the surrounding areas.
“This market will not only serve the local community but also provide traders with a conducive space to conduct business. The new stalls will foster a more organized and competitive trading environment, ultimately contributing to the economic prosperity of Kapenguria,” Kachapin remarked.
The governor further highlighted the market’s prime location near the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kapenguria campus, stating that the influx of students and staff would significantly increase demand for goods and services, thus boosting the earnings of local traders.
“With the KMTC campus close by, Bendera Market will become a key economic center, offering traders a steady customer base and ensuring better access to essential commodities for residents,” he added.
One-Year Tax Holiday for Traders
In a significant relief for small-scale traders, Governor Kachapin announced that all vendors occupying the new stalls would be exempted from paying taxes for one year.
The move aims to allow businesses to establish themselves without the immediate burden of financial obligations, giving traders time to expand their operations and enhance profitability.
“By granting a one-year tax holiday, we are providing traders with an opportunity to stabilize and grow their businesses, ultimately setting them up for long-term success,” the governor stated.
Enhanced Security Measures and Infrastructure Upgrades
To ensure a safe and secure trading environment, Governor Kachapin pledged to install security lights around Bendera Market.
The enhanced security measures will particularly benefit traders operating during evening hours, ensuring a safer space for both vendors and customers.
“To create a conducive and secure business environment, we will work closely with security agencies to safeguard the market and its traders. The installation of security lights will improve safety and encourage extended business hours,” he affirmed.
Job Creation for Youth: New Car Wash Facility in Bendera
As part of a broader initiative to create employment opportunities, Governor Kachapin revealed plans to set up a car wash facility in the Bendera area.
The project is expected to generate jobs for local youth, providing them with productive and sustainable livelihoods.
“This project is not just about enhancing the local economy but also about empowering young people by offering them meaningful employment opportunities. We are committed to reducing youth unemployment and ensuring they have avenues to earn a living,” Kachapin emphasized.
Government Commitment to Business Growth
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade, Industry, and Investment, Clare Parklea, reiterated the county government’s commitment to strengthening the business environment and ensuring that traders have the necessary resources to succeed.
“As a county, we remain dedicated to supporting small-scale traders and improving the infrastructure required for businesses to flourish. The commissioning of these stalls is a testament to our continued efforts to promote economic growth and stability,” Parklea stated.
Traders Welcome the New Development
Local traders have expressed their gratitude for the newly constructed stalls, citing improved facilities, security, and increased business opportunities.
Ruben Loshang’ole, one of the traders at Bendera Market, lauded the county government’s efforts, saying:
“The new stalls are spacious, modern, and more secure, which will help us attract more customers and improve our earnings. This is a major step towards enhancing our livelihoods, and we truly appreciate the support from the government.”
The commissioning of 80 new market stalls at Bendera, coupled with a one-year tax holiday, security enhancements, and youth employment initiatives, marks a significant milestone in West Pokot’s economic development agenda.
Governor Kachapin’s administration remains committed to creating a conducive business environment that fosters growth, empowers traders, and strengthens the local economy.
With improved infrastructure, enhanced security, and proactive economic policies, Bendera Market is set to become a key driver of trade and prosperity in Kapenguria and beyond.
