Wajir, Kenya| The Wajir County Government has officially launched its third annual Iftar food distribution program, an initiative aimed at providing relief to vulnerable households during the holy month of Ramadan.

Spearheaded by the Department of Special Programmes, the program seeks to ensure that disadvantaged families can observe Ramadan with dignity and adequate nutrition.

This year, the county government has procured approximately 600 metric tons of essential food supplies, including maize flour, fortified porridge, dates, and cooking oil. The distribution is set to benefit over 23,000 households across all 30 wards in Wajir County.

Commitment to Supporting the Needy

Speaking at the launch event, Deputy Governor Ahmed Muhumed, who represented Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, emphasized the significance of the initiative in upholding the spirit of Ramadan— a period marked by fasting, prayer, reflection, and acts of charity.

“Ramadan is a sacred period of sacrifice and giving. Under our administration, we are committed to ensuring that the spirit of Ramadan reaches every household in need. This initiative is part of our dedication to supporting our people and ensuring they have a blessed and fulfilling Ramadan,” said Deputy Governor Muhumed.

The program is being implemented in collaboration with religious leaders, including the Council of Imams, who play a key role in identifying the most deserving families.

Priority is given to households headed by individuals living with disabilities, the elderly, widows, single parents, child-headed families, those with chronic illnesses, pastoral dropouts, and economically disadvantaged families.

Ensuring Timely and Efficient Distribution

Deputy Governor Muhumed reiterated the county government’s commitment to social welfare and inclusivity, stating that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to combat food insecurity and promote community well-being.

“We recognize that the economic hardships many families face are exacerbated during Ramadan. It is our responsibility to step in and provide support where it is most needed. We will work diligently to ensure timely and efficient food distribution to all intended beneficiaries,” he added.

Community Appreciation and Impact

Local community leaders and residents have welcomed the initiative, praising the county government for its proactive approach in addressing food insecurity during Ramadan.

Many beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, which they say will significantly ease their burden during the fasting period.

The Iftar food distribution program is expected to alleviate hunger and improve the quality of life for thousands of vulnerable individuals across Wajir County.

As the holy month progresses, the county government has pledged to continue monitoring the program to ensure that all targeted households receive the much-needed assistance.
