A Call for Unity and Peace

During his inaugural address, Abbaa Gadaa Guyo Boru Guyo emphasized the need for unity, peace, and harmony among the Borana people.

He urged the community to uphold the core values of the Gadaa system, which prioritizes consensus-building, social cohesion, and democratic leadership.

“As we embark on this new chapter, I call upon all Borana people, both in Ethiopia and Kenya, to remain united, uphold our traditions, and work together for the prosperity of our nation,” he declared.

“Let us strengthen our bonds, resolve conflicts amicably, and ensure that peace prevails within our communities.”

His speech resonated deeply with attendees, reaffirming the importance of cultural identity and collective responsibility in maintaining stability within the Borana nation.

Smooth Power Transition Under the Gadaa System

The transfer of power from the outgoing Abbaa Gadaa Guyyoo Jarso Liban to Guyo Boru Guyo followed the structured and time-honored traditions of the Gadaa system, an indigenous democratic governance model that has guided the Oromo people for centuries.

The Gadaa system is based on an eight-year leadership cycle, during which elected leaders oversee social, political, and judicial matters.

The peaceful transition of power reaffirms the strength of this governance system, which has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

Beyond fostering unity within the Borana nation, Abbaa Gadaa Guyo Boru Guyo also underscored the importance of maintaining harmonious relations with neighboring communities.

He stressed that peaceful coexistence and mutual respect are vital for regional stability and development.

“In order to ensure sustainable peace, we must strengthen our cooperation with neighboring communities. Our traditions teach us to resolve disputes through dialogue and to build bridges of friendship and solidarity,” he stated.

His remarks highlighted the Borana people’s historical role in promoting regional peace and their ongoing commitment to fostering good relations with diverse ethnic groups across Ethiopia and Kenya.

A Vision for the Future
