Governor Ali Leads Kenyan Delegation to Historic Borana Gadaa Inauguration in Ethiopia

Arda Jilla Badassa, Arero, Ethiopia| Marsabit County Governor Mohamud Ali led a high-profile Kenyan delegation to the historic inauguration of Abba Gadaa Guyyo Boru as the 72nd supreme leader of the Borana Gadaa system.

The momentous event, held at the sacred grounds of Arda Jilla Badassa in Arero, Ethiopia, brought together dignitaries, community leaders, and cultural custodians in a grand celebration of Borana heritage, unity, and democratic tradition.

The Kenyan delegation, which included Marsabit Women Representative Naomi Waqo, Senator Mohamed Chute, and Principal Secretary Kello Harsama, joined Ethiopian leaders and representatives from various Oromo communities in witnessing the peaceful transition of power within the centuries-old Gadaa system.

This system, an integral part of Oromo culture, functions as both a socio-political and legal institution, underscoring indigenous governance principles.

In his address, Governor Ali extended heartfelt congratulations to Abba Gadaa Guyyo Boru and his leadership team, emphasizing the significance of the occasion.

He also acknowledged the Ethiopian government’s growing recognition of the Gadaa system, noting improvements in governance that have benefited the Borana community.

“In the past, the Borana people experienced marginalization by successive governments, but the current administration has ushered in significant progress,” Governor Ali remarked.

He highlighted infrastructural advancements such as improved road networks, water projects, universities, and airports, which he attributed to the Oromo-led Ethiopian government’s policies.

Governor Ali lauded the Borana culture as an emblem of peace and democracy, emphasizing the uniqueness of the Gadaa system.

“The peaceful transition of the Baalii is a testament to the strength of our traditions. We should all take pride in this democratic institution that has withstood the test of time,” he asserted.

Additionally, he encouraged continued support for Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government, citing its contributions to regional development and the recent reopening of the Kenya-Ethiopia border, which is expected to enhance trade and cross-border relations.

The chief guest, Oromia Regional President Shimelis Abdisa, commended the Borana community for their unwavering commitment to preserving the Gadaa system.

“For generations, our identity has faced numerous challenges, yet the Borana people have steadfastly safeguarded our heritage,” President Abdisa noted.

He underscored the significance of the Gadaa system, describing it as more than just a cultural practice.

“It is a comprehensive way of life that encompasses governance, ethics, law, and identity for the Oromo people,” he added.

The President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring that the Gadaa system remains a cornerstone of Oromo society.

“One of our primary goals is to nurture and protect the culture, customs, and identity of the Oromo people, ensuring its preservation for generations to come,” he declared.

Unity and Solidarity Among Oromo Communities

The event also saw the participation of Abba Gadaas from other Oromo communities, who expressed solidarity with the Borana people.

They emphasized the importance of unity among the Oromo, calling on members of the community to actively promote their cultural traditions, including attire and language.

The inauguration of Abba Gadaa Guyyo Boru Guyo marks the beginning of a new era for the Borana community, with a strong focus on unity, peace, and development.

In his acceptance speech, the newly sworn-in Abba Gadaa pledged to uphold the values of the Borana people, preserve their cultural identity, and prioritize education.

He also vowed to fulfill all traditional rituals and responsibilities entrusted to his leadership.

He called on the Ethiopian government to take concrete steps in supporting the Gadaa system, including mapping the sacred grounds of Arda Jilla on GPS and upgrading the road infrastructure from Yabalo to Liban/Nagele to enhance accessibility.

As the Borana community embarks on this new chapter under the leadership of Abba Gadaa Guyyo Boru, the emphasis remains on the preservation of traditions, sustainable development, and the strengthening of cultural ties within the broader Oromo nation.
