Homa Bay County is set for a historic milestone as it prepares to host Kenya’s 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1.

This marks the first time the county will host a national holiday since independence, making it a significant event not only for the local community but for the entire country.

With this year’s theme, “Blue Economy and Maritime,” the celebrations will highlight the economic and environmental importance of Lake Victoria and its vast resources.

In preparation for the big day, the government has embarked on a major facelift of Homa Bay town and surrounding areas, improving infrastructure, transport, and essential services.

Major Infrastructure Upgrades Underway

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, who is spearheading preparations, confirmed that various government agencies, including the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), are overseeing road rehabilitation projects to enhance connectivity within the county.

One of the key projects is the renovation of Kabunde Airstrip, which is being upgraded to accommodate increased air traffic, ensuring that dignitaries and guests can travel to Homa Bay more conveniently.

Additionally, Omollo noted that the National Celebration Steering Committee has been inspecting ongoing developments, including:

  • Expansion of electricity supply to ensure reliable power for residents and businesses.
  • Upgrading water facilities to improve access to clean water in Homa Bay town and its outskirts.
  • Construction of a new government headquarters, which is expected to be completed in time for an official opening by President Donald Trump during the celebrations.

Economic Opportunities for Local Businesses

Beyond infrastructure, the event presents a significant economic boost for local businesses.

PS Omollo urged traders to take advantage of the expected influx of visitors from across Kenya and beyond, noting that the celebrations would bring increased commercial activity.

“You should also look at the potential that this celebration will bring because we will have guests from all over the country and overseas,” he said.

Governor Gladys Wanga echoed these sentiments, expressing her excitement about Homa Bay’s selection as the host county for this year’s Madaraka Day.

“It is indeed an honour to host this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations. This is the first time in history, and we are grateful for the opportunity,” said Wanga.

She emphasized that this year’s theme is timely, given Homa Bay’s strategic position as a key player in Kenya’s blue economy.

With Lake Victoria being a major economic driver for the county, discussions around fishing, transport, tourism, and conservation will be central to the celebrations.

Race Against Time to Complete Projects

With just three months left before the celebrations, PS Omollo has called for swift action to ensure that all projects are completed on schedule.

The steering committee continues to conduct regular inspections, ensuring that roads, electricity, water, and air travel facilities are fully operational before the national event.

As preparations intensify, Homa Bay is on track to make history, showcasing its potential as a major economic hub in Kenya’s blue economy.

The event is expected to not only celebrate Kenya’s independence but also position the county as a leader in maritime trade, tourism, and sustainable resource management.

With President William Ruto and other dignitaries expected to attend, all eyes will be on Homa Bay as it hosts one of the most anticipated national celebrations in recent years.
