Somali and Ethiopian Leaders Hold High-Level Meeting at Villa Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia| The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, hosted a crucial meeting with the Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, at Villa Somalia during the Ethiopian leader’s official working visit to the country.

The discussions between the two leaders focused on enhancing cooperation in security, economic development, and social affairs, reinforcing the long-standing historical and neighbourly relations between the two nations.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to mutual respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, underscoring the importance of fostering peaceful and cooperative relations.

Security and Regional Stability

A key highlight of the meeting was the joint endorsement of a recent understanding reached between the commanders of the Somali National Army (SNA) and the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF).

This agreement aims to strengthen regional security and stability. President Hassan Sheikh and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed commended the ongoing technical negotiations in Ankara, which demonstrate the commitment of both nations to engaging in constructive dialogue and practical cooperation.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed his deep appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by the Somali government and its people to him and his delegation.

He reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations in a manner that serves the mutual interests of both nations and contributes to regional stability.

In turn, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud lauded the Ethiopian leader’s visit and the productive discussions held at Villa Somalia.

He reiterated Somalia’s long-standing diplomatic principles, which are rooted in good neighbourliness, mutual respect, and the protection of national sovereignty.

The Somali leader firmly stated that Somalia will not tolerate any violation of its territorial integrity, unity, or the collective will of its people.

The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their dedication to fostering a peaceful, cooperative, and mutually beneficial relationship between Somalia and Ethiopia.
