Mogadishu, Somalia| The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, officially inaugurated the Sixth Session of the 11th Federal Parliament today.
In his opening address, the President commended the Speaker, Members of the House of the People, and the Upper House for their dedication and substantial contributions during previous parliamentary sessions.
Praise for Security Forces in the Fight Against Extremism
President Hassan Sheikh highlighted the ongoing military operations to liberate areas under the control of terrorist groups, acknowledging the sacrifices made by Somalia’s Armed Forces, Macawisley Defence Volunteers, and Puntland’s Daraawiish Forces.
He expressed deep appreciation for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding Somalia’s security and sovereignty.
The President also underscored the threat posed by the Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group to maritime security in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, a matter of growing regional and international concern.
“We stand in full solidarity with Puntland’s security forces and the local population, who have dealt devastating blows to Daesh extremists. This is a just war, and it is our duty to support our brothers in their fight for liberation and dignity.”
Commitment to Direct Elections and Constitutional Reforms
Addressing the country’s political landscape, President Hassan Sheikh emphasized that agreements reached under the National Consultative Council and the parliamentary approval of the first four chapters of the constitution have laid the groundwork for direct elections.
This marks a significant departure from the previous indirect electoral system, which he described as a major impediment to Somalia’s democratic progress.
The President urged Parliament to finalise the remaining constitutional chapters during this session, stressing the importance of resolving long-standing disputes that have hindered state-building efforts.
“Our people look to us with hope and trust. They have tasked us with moving beyond the stagnation of indirect elections. We must create an environment where Somali citizens can freely elect their representatives, exercising their democratic rights without external imposition. It would be a failure of leadership to revert to the flawed system of appointments and indirect voting.”
Economic Progress and Fiscal Discipline
Reflecting on Somalia’s historic debt relief in late 2023, the President highlighted the government’s commitment to economic self-sufficiency.
He proudly noted that the Federal Government has not taken on any new debt since achieving debt forgiveness. Instead, efforts have been focused on maximizing domestic revenue collection and ensuring financial sustainability through taxation.
He extended his gratitude to businesses and taxpayers for their vital role in stabilising and developing the nation, acknowledging their patriotism and resilience in contributing to national progress.
“Our success in debt relief was a turning point. Since then, we have prioritised self-reliance, avoiding reliance on external borrowing and instead strengthening our economy through the contributions of our own people.”
A Pivotal Session for Somalia’s Future
With the Sixth Parliamentary Session now underway, President Hassan Sheikh called for unity and commitment among lawmakers to accelerate key legislative and governance reforms.
He stressed that the work ahead would be instrumental in shaping Somalia’s political stability, security, and economic resilience.
As Somalia continues its journey towards peace, democracy, and self-reliance, the President reaffirmed his administration’s determination to build a prosperous and secure future for all Somali citizens.
