Narok, Kenya| Leaders across Kenya, including those from Narok County, have joined the nation in mourning the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati.
Chebukati, who played a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s electoral landscape, passed away while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
Governor Patrick Ntutu led Narok leaders in paying tribute to Chebukati, recognizing his unwavering dedication to the country’s democratic process.
Speaking at Olposimoru trading centre, where he launched a newly constructed sales yard, two maternity wards, and a water project, Ntutu described Chebukati as a steadfast leader whose contributions during the tumultuous 2017 and 2022 general elections left an indelible mark on Kenya’s history.
“His commitment to upholding democracy was evident throughout his tenure. His leadership ensured credible elections, even in the face of immense pressure. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” Ntutu stated.
East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament David Sankok echoed similar sentiments, lauding Chebukati’s courage in overseeing two highly contested elections.
Sankok also urged Kenyans to refrain from spreading insensitive messages on social media that could add to the grief of the bereaved family.
“We must give the family of Chebukati the peace they need at this trying moment. No one should take joy in another person’s demise because death is an inevitable part of life,” Sankok emphasized.
Narok County Assembly Majority Leader Sonkoi Lemein described Chebukati as a fearless leader who stood firm in ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.
He noted that the country had lost a statesman who dedicated his career to strengthening Kenya’s electoral process.
Chebukati’s tenure as IEBC chair was marked by defining moments in Kenya’s democratic journey, including managing two controversial presidential elections and navigating the complexities of an evolving electoral system.
His leadership and integrity remain a lasting legacy in the country’s political history.
As the nation mourns his passing, leaders have called for respect and unity in remembering a man who played a critical role in shaping Kenya’s democratic future.
