Nairobi, Kenya| Kenya is mourning the loss of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, who passed away at the age of 64 after a prolonged illness.

His family confirmed his death on Thursday night, February 20, marking the end of a distinguished career in law and electoral governance.

A Nation Pays Tribute

Chebukati’s passing has elicited an outpouring of tributes from leaders across the country, recognizing his contributions to Kenya’s democratic process.

President William Ruto expressed his deep sorrow, describing Chebukati as a dedicated public servant who upheld the integrity of Kenya’s electoral system.

“I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country.” President Ruto said in mourning the late Chebukati.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.” He added in a statement posted on the president’s official social media timelines.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula also paid tribute, referring to Chebukati as an “eminent jurist” and a steadfast defender of democracy.

“As an advocate of great repute, Mr. Chebukati embodied the dignity and integrity of the legal profession. His passing is a profound loss not only to his family but also to the legal fraternity, the electoral governance space, and the nation as a whole,” Wetang’ula remarked.

Former IEBC commissioner Dr. Roselyn Akombe, who worked closely with Chebukati, also expressed her condolences in a brief but poignant message: “Rest in peace, Mr. Chairman.”

A Life Dedicated to Law and Public Service

Wafula Chebukati was a distinguished lawyer and administrator, deeply involved in Kenya’s legal and electoral governance systems.

He was a member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the founder of Cootow & Associates Advocates, a law firm he established in Nairobi in 2006.

In 2007, he ventured into politics, contesting the Saboti Constituency parliamentary seat under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket. Despite his unsuccessful bid, he remained active in governance matters.

His most notable public service role came in January 2017, when he was appointed Chairperson of the IEBC by then-President Uhuru Kenyatta.

During his tenure, Chebukati oversaw three major elections, including the 2017 general election and its controversial repeat poll, as well as the 2022 general elections.

His leadership was often marked by intense scrutiny and political pressure, yet he remained steadfast in his commitment to electoral integrity.

Chebukati retired from the IEBC on January 17, 2023, after completing his six-year term.

Final Days and Legacy

Reports indicate that Chebukati had been hospitalized earlier in the week, battling severe health complications.

Sources revealed that he was declared clinically dead due to organ failure.

His academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Nairobi and a master’s degree in business administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

He was also a member of the Institute of Certified Secretaries and the International Court of Justice.

His impact on Kenya’s electoral history will remain significant, shaping the country’s democratic processes for years to come.
