Naivasha, Kenya| In the heart of Naivasha, a dedicated humanitarian, Stephen Maina, is leading efforts to save lives and provide aid to those in need.

As the 29-year-old head of the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) Naivasha branch, Maina has been at the forefront of emergency response, disaster management, and community outreach, impacting countless lives since joining the Red Cross as a volunteer in 2015.

Kenya Red Cross: A Pillar of Humanitarian Aid

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) is one of the many International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement societies worldwide, established in 1965.

Its mission is to alleviate human suffering by responding to disasters, accidents, and emergencies while offering humanitarian aid without discrimination.

The organization is actively involved in a variety of projects, including famine relief, blood donation drives, first aid training, disaster and emergency response, and education services.

The KRCS also launched the KRCS App, a pioneering humanitarian platform that provides real-time emergency alerts, first-aid tips, volunteer opportunities, and other life-saving resources.

Maina’s Journey: From Student Volunteer to Humanitarian Leader

Maina’s commitment to humanitarian service began in secondary school, continued through university, and remains unwavering today.

His selfless dedication became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when he led awareness campaigns across Gilgil, Mai Mahiu, and Naivasha, some of the hardest-hit areas.

Today, he is actively involved in raising awareness about the Mpox outbreak in Gilgil and Naivasha sub-counties.

Emergency Response and Life-Saving Interventions

Naivasha’s KRCS branch plays a crucial role in disaster response, particularly along the notorious Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, where accidents frequently occur.

Maina and his team are often the first responders at black spots such as Karai, Delamere, and Morendat junctions, which have witnessed numerous tragic accidents, including fatal bus crashes and vehicle fires.

“We experience at least two accidents involving vehicles or motorcycles on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway every week,” Maina reveals.

Among the major incidents they have responded to are last year’s flash floods in Mai Mahiu and the tragic Pwani University bus accident at Kayole, which claimed more than ten student lives.

The team was instrumental in saving lives, recovering victims, and offering psychological support to survivors and bereaved families.

Empowering Communities Through Training and Partnerships

Beyond emergency response, Maina and his team are committed to empowering communities through first-aid training and collaborations with key stakeholders.

Recently, they trained 35 participants in Naivasha, equipping them with life-saving skills essential for responding to accidents in their communities.

The Naivasha KRCS branch also partners with the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) cluster to support vulnerable groups.

In Kambi ya Turkana, Mai Mahiu, they collaborated with the NGO Lifebloom to donate a water tank and distribute over 2,000 sanitary towels while conducting mental health awareness campaigns.

Upcoming initiatives include a “Show Love, Save a Life” blood drive on February 14-15, aimed at boosting blood supplies in Naivasha hospitals to aid accident victims and other emergency cases.

Challenges and the Need for Support

Despite their noble efforts, Naivasha’s KRCS branch faces significant challenges, including:

  • Funding Constraints: The organization relies on well-wishers and fundraising activities like charity walks and gala dinners to sustain operations.
  • Community Hostility and Road Safety Issues: Some locals are resistant to emergency responders, and heavy traffic delays rescue operations.
  • Limited Resources: While they work with the fire brigade for accident extractions, additional support is needed to enhance response efficiency.

Despite these obstacles, volunteer numbers in Naivasha’s KRCS branch are rising. The organization runs Red Cross clubs in schools, training students in first aid and emergency preparedness.

Their dedication has earned them accolades, including recognition from the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) and the prestigious Galaxy Awards in 2023 and 2024 for exemplary humanitarian service.

A Vision for the Future: Youth Resource Center

Maina’s next goal is to establish a Youth Resource Center in Naivasha, estimated to cost KES 700,000.

The center will equip young people with critical skills, mental health support, and resources to foster resilience and community development.

“We urge donors and well-wishers to support this initiative. Investing in youth is investing in a better future for our community,” Maina emphasizes.

The Power of Volunteerism

Maina’s journey exemplifies the impact of volunteerism and selfless service. He remains committed to his cause, driven by passion and a desire to make a difference.

“As a Red Cross volunteer, I’ve learned that passion and willingness to help the needy are crucial,” he reflects.

Through the tireless efforts of Maina and his team, the Kenya Red Cross in Naivasha continues to be a beacon of hope, proving that one individual’s dedication can transform countless lives.
