Mombasa, Kenya| A joyous atmosphere filled Serani Sports Grounds in Mombasa as 150 cohabiting couples braved the scorching sun to solemnize their marriages in a grand Muslim mass wedding.
The event, organized by the Mama Beauty Foundation, was marked by vibrant celebrations, cultural traditions, and a strong emphasis on the importance of marriage preparation.
The brides, dressed in elegant black buibui (a traditional Muslim women’s garment), and the grooms, clad in pristine white kanzus, sat patiently in designated tents, awaiting the nikah (Islamic marriage officiation).
Their long-awaited union was formalized by Sheikh Omar Buya, who officiated on behalf of the Chief Kadhi, who was unable to attend due to official duties.
As the final marriage rites were concluded, the air erupted with ululations, cheers, and festivity from family members, friends, and well-wishers who had gathered to witness the remarkable occasion.
Premarital Counselling to Strengthen Marriages
Before their wedding day, the couples underwent comprehensive premarital counselling, aimed at ensuring they build strong and lasting marriages.
Organizers emphasized that many divorce cases stem from inadequate preparation for married life, making such counseling a crucial component of the initiative.
The sessions covered key topics such as effective communication, conflict resolution mechanisms, and patience, providing the couples with essential skills to navigate marital challenges.
Call to Reduce Dowry Demands
Speaking at the event, Likoni MP Mishi Mboko urged families to abandon outdated cultural practices that hinder marriages, particularly the high dowry demands that discourage young couples from formalizing their unions.
According to Islamic teachings, the dowry (mahr) should be determined by the bride herself.
However, she noted that in modern times, some families have taken control of the process, imposing excessive demands that make marriage financially burdensome.
“Whenever dowry is expensive, it exacerbates fornication and premarital pregnancies. It is not a must for young men to be employed to marry.” Mboko stated.
“Today, how many youths don’t have a source of income? Should they be denied marriage?” she posed.
Advice on Polygamy
The legislator also addressed the issue of polygamy, advising men to approach it responsibly.
She emphasized that those considering marrying multiple wives should first ensure they fully provide for and satisfy the needs of their existing families to prevent broken homes and negative impacts on children.
The mass wedding was widely lauded as an initiative that not only fosters strong marriages but also promotes moral values, family stability, and Islamic teachings on matrimony.
As the newlyweds embarked on their journey of married life, the event stood as a testament to the power of community support, faith, and the importance of proper preparation for marriage.
