Launch of New Programmes to Address Industry Needs and Technological Advancements

The Open University of Kenya (OUK) has introduced 10 new academic programmes and eight professional development courses to align with evolving industry needs and technological advancements.

This initiative aims to equip students with the necessary skills for the modern job market while reinforcing OUK’s role as a leader in digital education.

New Degree and Postgraduate Programmes

The newly launched academic programmes include:

  1. Bachelor of Agricultural Technology and Food Systems
  2. Bachelor of Economics and Data Science
  3. Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computing
  4. Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  5. Master of Data Science
  6. Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence
  7. Master of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics
  8. Master in Learning, Sign, and Technology
  9. Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration

These programmes are designed to prepare students for emerging career opportunities in fields such as agriculture, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and business administration.

Introduction of Professional Development Courses

In addition to the degree and postgraduate offerings, OUK is introducing eight professional development courses aimed at enhancing skills in key areas of professional and personal growth. These include:

  • Mental Health Awareness
  • Gender and Diversity
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Corporate Governance
  • Business Modelling for Entrepreneurs
  • Accountability Fundamentals
  • E-learning Essentials for Online Engagement
  • Online Assessment

These short courses will provide professionals and students with practical knowledge and skills that are highly relevant in today’s dynamic work environment.

OUK’s Commitment to Digital Learning and Market Relevance

Speaking during the official launch, OUK Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Elijah Omwenga, emphasized that the introduction of these programmes is part of the university’s strategy to increase student enrolment and strengthen its position as a pioneer in digital education.

“We started with seven programmes, and now we are launching 10 academic programmes, along with eight professional development courses. These initiatives will not only increase student enrolment but also enhance our impact in shaping the future of higher education in Kenya,” stated Prof. Omwenga.

His sentiments were echoed by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Carolyne Omulando, who highlighted the rigorous consultation process undertaken in developing the new courses to ensure they align with market demands.

“We ensured that these programmes align with market demands and technological evolution. This commitment to relevance and quality underscores OUK’s dedication to providing accessible, high-quality education through digital learning,” said Prof. Omulando.

Growth and Future Prospects

Since its inception in 2023, OUK has already enrolled 2,500 students, and this number is expected to grow significantly with the launch of the new programmes.

The university’s continued focus on digital education and market-driven courses is set to attract more learners seeking flexible, high-quality, and career-relevant education.

With these strategic developments, OUK is positioning itself as a key player in the transformation of Kenya’s higher education sector, ensuring graduates are well-equipped to meet the demands of the evolving job market.
