American Airlines CEO Robert Isom has issued a heartfelt statement following a tragic mid-air collision involving one of the airline’s regional jets and a military helicopter on Wednesday night.

The accident has claimed at least 19 lives and left authorities scrambling for answers.

The devastating crash occurred around 9 p.m. ET when a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jetliner, carrying 64 passengers and crew, collided with a military helicopter.

The aircraft then plunged into the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, as reported by CBS News.

In a video statement released on American Airlines’ website and social media platform X, Isom acknowledged the gravity of the situation, saying, “I want to brief you on a serious accident that occurred involving an American Eagle aircraft. The aircraft was operated by PSA Airlines, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines.”

Expressing his condolences, the 58-year-old CEO added, “First and most importantly, I’d like to express our deep sorrow about these events. This is a difficult day for all of us at American Airlines.”

He assured that the airline’s primary focus was on supporting those affected, stating, “Our efforts now are focused entirely on the needs of our passengers, crew members, partners, first responders, along with their families and loved ones.”

While details surrounding the cause of the collision remain unclear, Isom acknowledged the growing concerns, stating, “I know that there are many questions, and at this early stage, I will not be able to answer all of them, but I do want to share the information I have at this time.”

Authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), have launched an investigation into the disaster.

Emergency response teams continue search and recovery operations in the Potomac River as families and loved ones await further information.

This tragedy marks one of the most severe aviation accidents in recent years, raising urgent questions about airspace safety and collision prevention measures.
