Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has officially assumed the role of acting Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.
This development follows a significant Cabinet reshuffle announced on December 19, 2024, by the Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei.
The reshuffle saw the outgoing Agriculture CS, Dr. Andrew Karanja, nominated to serve as Kenya’s ambassador to Brazil.
His departure necessitated the interim appointment of Aden Duale to oversee the crucial ministry, which plays a pivotal role in addressing food security and agricultural development.
Handover Ceremony at Kilimo House
In a brief but symbolic handover ceremony held at Kilimo House on Tuesday, Dr. Karanja expressed his gratitude to the ministry’s staff for their unwavering support during his tenure.
He also extended his best wishes to the incoming leadership, urging them to continue prioritizing the ministry’s strategic objectives.
Key figures in attendance included:
Dr. Paul Kiprono, Principal Secretary for Agriculture
Jonathan Mueke, Principal Secretary for Livestock Development
Collin Marangu, Agriculture Secretary
Rashid Khator, Secretary Administration
The officials lauded Dr. Karanja for his dedicated service and pledged their full support to Aden Duale in his acting capacity.
Aden Duale’s Vision for the Ministry
In his remarks, Duale reaffirmed his commitment to steering the ministry towards achieving its mandate.
He emphasized the importance of continuity and pledged to prioritize food security, sustainable agricultural practices, and the welfare of farmers and livestock producers across the country.
“As we transition, my focus will be on ensuring stability and continuity in our programs, especially those targeting food security and resilience in the agricultural sector.
I am ready to work closely with all stakeholders to build on the progress made by my predecessor,” Duale said.
Mutahi Kagwe Awaiting Vetting
The reshuffle also introduced Mutahi Kagwe, former Health Cabinet Secretary, as the nominee for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.
Kagwe, along with other newly appointed Cabinet and diplomatic nominees, is now awaiting vetting and approval by the National Assembly.
The reshuffle comes at a critical time when the ministry is tackling challenges such as drought, rising food prices, and the need for sustainable agricultural innovations.
Duale’s experience in leadership and governance is expected to ensure a smooth transition and continued progress as the ministry awaits its permanent leadership.
Strategic Implications
With Duale temporarily at the helm, the Ministry of Agriculture is poised to maintain its focus on key priorities, including boosting food production, addressing climate-related challenges, and improving the livelihoods of Kenyan farmers.
The interim leadership also underscores the government’s commitment to a seamless transition in critical government ministries.
Kenya now waits to see how the new leadership, once confirmed, will address the pressing challenges facing the agriculture sector and ensure its long-term sustainability.
