•Governor Kuti Cites Health Concerns, Paves Way for Political Newcomer in Heated Isiolo Gubernatorial Race
Isiolo County Governor Dr. Mohamed Kuti has officially announced his retirement from active politics ahead of the August 2022 general elections, citing health concerns.
The unexpected decision marks the end of his illustrious political career spanning nearly two decades, during which he served as Isiolo North MP, Senator, and finally as the county’s second governor.
Dr. Kuti made the declaration in a high-profile meeting attended by Sakuye elders, county leaders, and key political figures, including County Assembly Speaker Hussein Roba.
In a move that underscores his commitment to political stability in the region, the outgoing governor has endorsed Nairobi County Assembly Majority Leader Abdi Ibrahim Hassan, popularly known as Guyo, as his preferred successor.
Kuti’s Endorsement and the Political Landscape
Guyo, who is currently the MCA for Matopeni in Nairobi, is running on the Jubilee Party ticket. His entry into the race has reshaped the contest, with analysts predicting a fierce battle against former Governor Godana Doyo, Women Representative Rehema Jaldesa, and Nuh Ibrahim, among others.
Speaking on his decision to step down, Dr. Kuti expressed confidence in Guyo’s leadership abilities.
“After deep reflection and consultations with my family and political allies, I have decided to retire from active politics due to health reasons. I firmly believe that Guyo is the right candidate to continue our development agenda and take Isiolo to the next level,” Dr. Kuti stated.
Guyo acknowledged the endorsement with gratitude, calling it both an honor and a responsibility.
“I deeply appreciate Governor Kuti for his mentorship and confidence in my leadership. His selfless decision to step aside for the sake of unity and development is commendable. I assure the people of Isiolo that I will work tirelessly to fulfill the vision we share for this great county,” he said.
A Shift in Political Strategy
Initially, Guyo had declared interest in the Embakasi Central parliamentary seat. However, with Kuti’s endorsement and the backing of key Isiolo leaders, he pivoted his focus to the gubernatorial race—a move he described as a “game-changer.”
“Switching from Nairobi to Isiolo politics was not an easy decision, but after extensive consultations, I am confident that I can deliver transformative leadership for Isiolo residents,” he remarked.
Guyo has pledged to prioritize the completion of critical infrastructure projects initiated by Dr. Kuti, including the Isiolo Stadium, County Government Headquarters, Modern Abattoir, and Modern Market.
“Development must not be interrupted by political transitions. My first priority will be to ensure these projects are completed to benefit the people of Isiolo,” he affirmed.
Political Reactions and Growing Support
Guyo’s endorsement has sparked mixed reactions, with some political leaders rallying behind him while others remain skeptical of his sudden shift from Nairobi politics.
Former Cabinet Administrative Secretary Mumina Bonaya, a key political figure in Isiolo, threw her weight behind Guyo’s candidacy, calling it a step in the right direction.
“Guyo has the experience and the vision to lead Isiolo to prosperity. I believe in his ability to unite the county and bring meaningful change,” Bonaya stated.
However, the race remains competitive, with Godana Doyo enjoying strong backing from the Borana Council of Elders.
Senator Fatuma Dullo, though yet to officially declare her position, is also seen as a formidable force. However, sources say she may have to back Guyo as there is no animosity between the two.
What Lies Ahead
With less than four months to the elections, Guyo faces an uphill task of consolidating support among Isiolo’s diverse communities while countering rivals who view him as an outsider.
His ties to President Uhuru Kenyatta and the ruling Jubilee Party could play a significant role in his campaign, but local dynamics, including clan politics, will be key determinants of the outcome.
As Dr. Kuti exits the political stage, his endorsement of Guyo signals a new chapter in Isiolo politics.
Whether Guyo can translate this support into electoral victory remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—the battle for Isiolo’s top seat has just intensified.
