Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 General Election, signaling his return to the political forefront with a bold promise to restore and reform the country’s governance.

Addressing thousands of supporters at a packed Gusii Stadium in Kisii County, Matiang’i stated that his decision to contest the presidency was prompted by what he termed as widespread and consistent calls from Kenyans across different regions and walks of life, urging him to offer himself for leadership.

“I have listened to you, and I am ready,” he told the energized crowd. “Kenya must be fixed, and I am stepping forward to offer that leadership. We cannot continue on the current path. It is time for a new direction built on integrity, service, and national renewal.”

Matiang’i, who is currently serving in a senior advisory role with the World Bank, also used the occasion to announce that he will be resigning from his international assignment to dedicate himself fully to the presidential campaign.

His imminent return to active politics is expected to energize his support base, especially in his home region and among reform-minded voters across the country.

The announcement marks the beginning of what is likely to be a highly competitive and closely watched race, as the country gears up for the 2027 polls.

With his reputation as a firm administrator during his tenure in the Ministry of Interior and earlier roles in the Education and ICT ministries, Matiang’i is expected to run on a platform of accountability, public service reform, and national unity.

Political analysts suggest that Matiang’i’s entry into the race could significantly alter the dynamics of the 2027 contest, particularly if he manages to forge strategic alliances with other opposition figures or mobilize disaffected segments of the electorate.

His no-nonsense public service record and technocratic appeal could resonate with voters frustrated by corruption, economic stagnation, and political polarization.

While he did not unveil a detailed policy platform during his declaration, Matiang’i promised to embark on a nationwide listening tour in the coming months, during which he will engage with citizens to craft a people-centered manifesto.

His declaration is seen as a direct challenge to the current administration, signaling a possible realignment of opposition forces and setting the stage for a vigorous political season ahead.

As the race begins to take shape, all eyes will be on Matiang’i and how he navigates the complex political landscape in his bid for State House.
