The International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM) is urging organizations, government agencies, and corporations across the globe to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in their procurement and supply chain operations to enhance efficiency, boost productivity, and gain strategic value in an increasingly complex business environment.

In a virtual address delivered from Egerton University’s Njoro Main Campus during the 8th Internet and Supply Chain Conference held in Xiamen, China, IFPSM President and Egerton University Council Member, Eng. Chris Oanda, emphasized that AI is no longer a futuristic concept but a transformative force actively reshaping the landscape of procurement and supply chain management.

“Artificial Intelligence is redefining how firms and government agencies manage risk, make decisions, and maintain operational agility,” Eng. Oanda stated.

“It is enabling organizations to monitor procurement and supply chains in real time, automate repetitive tasks, and streamline operations for increased efficiency and cost-effectiveness.”

With more than 300 professionals from over 200 internet and supply chain companies in attendance, the conference provided a platform to explore how digital transformation and AI-backed solutions are revolutionizing traditional procurement processes.

IFPSM, which represents over 250,000 supply chain professionals in more than 40 countries, used the forum to champion the integration of cutting-edge technologies into the core of supply chain strategies.

Eng. Oanda highlighted that AI-powered tools can automate a range of routine tasks—including data entry, invoice processing, purchase order generation, and contract management—freeing up human capital for more strategic roles.

“By automating labor-intensive activities, AI allows procurement teams to focus on higher-value functions such as supplier relationship management, risk assessment, and strategic planning,” he explained.

Furthermore, AI facilitates more accurate demand forecasting, improved capacity planning, and real-time data analysis—capabilities that are critical to navigating the growing complexity of global supply networks.

Eng. Oanda pointed out that AI enables enhanced supplier evaluation, helps identify inefficiencies within supply chains, and ensures better compliance and risk management.

“Procurement has historically depended on manual comparisons, past performance reviews, and human intuition. However, these traditional approaches are being outpaced by the need for speed, precision, and adaptability,” Eng. Oanda noted.

“AI addresses these modern demands by providing actionable insights, predictive analytics, and intelligent process orchestration.”

He stressed that digital transformation through AI is not only a technological upgrade but a strategic imperative for organizations seeking to remain competitive and resilient.

According to him, AI solutions empower firms to respond swiftly to changing market dynamics and customer expectations, all while minimizing operational costs and enhancing overall output.

As AI continues to evolve, its integration into procurement and supply chains is poised to unlock unprecedented levels of strategic value creation.

Eng. Oanda called on both public and private sector entities to embrace AI as a core component of their operational frameworks to drive sustainable growth, foster innovation, and secure long-term success in the global marketplace.

“AI is shaping a future where procurement and supply chains are not just operational necessities but strategic assets,” he concluded.
