•Billionaire Reacts to Senator Chris Murphy’s Admission of Washington’s Involvement in Regime Change
Elon Musk has reignited debate over the United States’ involvement in the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, emphasizing that “very few people” remember Washington’s role in orchestrating the removal of Ukraine’s then-President Viktor Yanukovich.
His comments came in response to a resurfaced video of U.S. Senator Chris Murphy acknowledging the active participation of American officials in the political upheaval.
U.S. Involvement in Ukraine’s 2014 Regime Change
The 2013-2014 Maidan protests in Kiev, initially sparked by Yanukovich’s decision to reject an association agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia, escalated into violent confrontations and ultimately led to his ousting.
Western media largely framed the event as a popular democratic uprising, but critics—including Musk—have pointed to significant American interference.
The video Musk referenced featured Senator Murphy, a Democrat, recalling how the U.S. “did not sit on the sidelines” during the protests.
He detailed how key American officials and lawmakers, including then-Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and Senator John McCain, actively supported the demonstrators.
“The Obama administration passed sanctions [against Ukrainian officials]… I really think that the clear position of the United States has in part been what has helped lead to this change in regime,” Murphy stated in the clip.
He further noted that the U.S. had economic incentives for steering Ukraine toward the West.
“If Ukraine is part of the European Union and thus is part of this new trade agreement with the United States, that could result in billions of dollars in new economic opportunities for the U.S.,” he explained.
Musk responded to the clip on his platform, X (formerly Twitter), simply stating: “Still very few people know about this.”
Musk’s Previous Statements on the Ukrainian Crisis
This is not the first time Musk has voiced his views on the events of 2014. In February 2023, he suggested that there was “no question that there was indeed a coup” in Ukraine, reinforcing a narrative that contrasts with the mainstream Western portrayal of the Maidan uprising.
Musk’s remarks come amid growing tensions between Washington and Kiev, particularly following a contentious White House meeting between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump.
During the exchange, Trump accused Zelenskyy of showing ingratitude for American military aid and of being unwilling to seek peace with Russia.
The fallout from this dispute also impacted U.S.-Ukraine economic ties, with a major deal regarding Ukrainian mineral resources reportedly derailed in the aftermath.
In response, Musk floated a controversial proposal: that Zelenskyy could retire to a neutral country under an amnesty deal, facilitating what he described as a “peaceful transition back to democracy in Ukraine.”
Zelenskyy’s Legitimacy Under Scrutiny
Adding to the political turbulence, Zelensky’s presidential term expired last spring, but he has refused to hold new elections, citing ongoing martial law.
This has led to growing criticism, with Russia branding him “illegitimate” and asserting that Ukraine’s parliament now holds governing authority.
Trump himself recently referred to Zelenskyy as a “dictator without elections” before later softening his stance.
A Controversial but Long-Standing Debate
Musk’s comments contribute to an ongoing discussion about the extent of U.S. involvement in Ukraine’s political affairs.
While the 2014 Maidan protests were widely presented as a grassroots movement for democracy, evidence of American diplomatic and financial backing has fueled accusations that Washington played an active role in regime change.
As tensions between Ukraine, Russia, and the West continue to evolve, Musk’s statements serve as a reminder of the geopolitical complexities underlying the conflict—raising questions about historical narratives, foreign influence, and the future of Ukrainian governance.
