•Russian Foreign Minister Highlights Diverging Positions on NATO and Conflict Resolution
The European Union’s stance on the Ukraine conflict is directly contradicting the position of U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
In a recent interview with Russia’s Channel 1, Lavrov suggested that while Washington has indicated that Ukraine’s NATO membership is no longer an option, European leaders continue to push for it, exacerbating tensions with Moscow.
Lavrov attributed the EU’s approach to policies set in motion by former U.S. President Joe Biden, which he argued pressured Europe into an unsustainable confrontation with Russia.
As a result, he said, the EU is facing mounting social and economic challenges but remains committed to supporting Ukraine militarily.
“In other words, they are in direct contradiction to the Trump administration,” Lavrov stated, adding that Trump, alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, had made it clear that negotiations were ongoing regarding the parameters of a final settlement—one that would exclude Ukraine’s NATO accession.
NATO Membership: A Point of Contention
Ukraine has long sought NATO membership as a safeguard against future Russian aggression.
However, Moscow has consistently opposed this, citing it as one of the core reasons for the conflict.
The Kremlin has insisted that Ukraine’s neutrality must be a key condition for any peace agreement.
Lavrov criticized Biden for failing to engage diplomatically with Russia, arguing that the insistence on Ukraine joining NATO was a “colossal mistake” that unnecessarily heightened tensions.
“By pushing Ukraine into NATO, they created an unacceptable threat for us,” Lavrov remarked.
Western ‘Peacekeeper’ Proposals Rejected
The Russian foreign minister also dismissed recent discussions within the EU about deploying Western “peacekeepers” to Ukraine.
Some European leaders, including those from the UK and France, have signaled openness to sending troops under the guise of peacekeeping efforts once a ceasefire is in place.
Lavrov, however, derided such proposals, calling those advocating them “dreamers” who are demonstrating their “complete political irrelevance.”
He warned that any such deployment could serve as a pretext for a direct NATO intervention in Ukraine—an act Moscow views as a severe escalation that could lead to direct conflict between Russia and the Western military alliance.
“We’ve been through all this before,” Lavrov said, likening current EU rearmament efforts to past military campaigns by Napoleon and Hitler, both of whom sought to subdue Russia but ultimately failed.
U.S.-Russia Talks and Possible Path Forward
Lavrov’s comments came just a day after senior Russian and American officials met in Saudi Arabia for 12-hour discussions aimed at resolving specific technical aspects of the conflict.
While details of these talks have yet to be disclosed, they signal ongoing diplomatic efforts despite broader geopolitical tensions.
The contrast between the U.S. and EU positions suggests potential rifts within the Western alliance over the best path forward in Ukraine.

As Washington explores settlement options that exclude NATO expansion, Europe appears determined to maintain its strong backing of Kiev—potentially setting the stage for further divisions within the bloc and between key Western allies.
