Harare, Zimbabwe| A high-level ministerial council meeting between the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) was held in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The meeting was convened to strengthen the roadmap for resolving the escalating security crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The multilateral meeting brought together key regional leaders, including Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Chairperson of the EAC Council of Ministers, Musalia Mudavadi; Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Soipan Tuya; Cabinet Secretary for EAC and Regional Affairs, Beatrice Moe; and Kenya’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri.

The meeting builds upon directives issued during the Joint EAC-SADC Heads of State Summit held on February 8, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The security situation in eastern DRC has remained a major concern for regional stability, with ongoing conflict involving armed groups, political tensions, and humanitarian crises.

Recognizing the urgency of coordinated intervention, the joint EAC-SADC engagement aims to harmonize efforts under existing peace frameworks, particularly the Nairobi and Luanda peace processes.

This ministerial meeting follows a prior session held on Saturday in Nairobi, Kenya, where EAC Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence deliberated on critical issues affecting the region.

The discussions in Harare seek to align strategies and reinforce commitments made by regional leaders in fostering sustainable peace and security in the DRC.

Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to working within both regional blocs to support the DRC in achieving lasting peace and stability.

As a member of both the EAC and SADC, Kenya emphasized that the security of the DRC is not only central to the stability of the Eastern Africa region but also to the broader African continent’s peace and prosperity.
