A transformative moment unfolded in Meru County as hundreds of young people gathered at the Meru National Polytechnic for a two-day recruitment event that could redefine their futures.
This was not just another career fair—it was the official launch of the “Kazi Majuu” Diaspora Recruitment Drive, a bold government initiative aimed at connecting Kenya’s youth with global employment opportunities.
Spearheaded by the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, the program seeks to address Kenya’s persistent youth unemployment crisis by creating structured pathways for skilled workers to secure jobs abroad while simultaneously strengthening local job creation efforts.
A Strategic Response to Unemployment
Speaking at the event, Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Ms. Roseline Njogu, underscored the urgency of tackling unemployment among Kenya’s youth, who make up 75% of the country’s population.
“Our youth are full of potential, but they are also facing a crisis of opportunities. Unemployment, compounded by rapid population growth and a mismatch between skills taught and those demanded in the workforce, continues to undermine their future,” she stated.
The “Kazi Majuu” Diaspora Recruitment Drive is a direct response to this crisis. Ms. Njogu unveiled the Global Labour Migration Strategy, a government-backed blueprint designed not just to send workers abroad but to empower them with sustainable career opportunities, ensuring their welfare and economic prosperity.
The Diaspora Placement Agency: Bridging Kenyan Talent with Global Employers
A key pillar of this initiative is the Diaspora Placement Agency (DPA), established in 2023 to serve as a central hub connecting Kenyan job seekers with international employers.
“This is about more than just finding a job. It’s about creating a global network for Kenyans—an opportunity to go beyond borders, share your skills, your work ethic, and your ambition with the world,” Ms. Njogu explained.
The initiative goes beyond generic job placements, offering specialized programs tailored to specific sectors, ensuring that Kenyan professionals find lucrative and fulfilling careers abroad.
Sector-Specific Global Placement Programs
Several targeted initiatives under “Kazi Majuu” are already in motion:
- Mkulima Majuu Programme – Encouraging members of the Kenyan diaspora to invest in agribusiness back home, creating employment while boosting food security.
- Mwalimu Majuu Programme – Placing Kenyan teachers in countries experiencing acute teacher shortages, ensuring education continuity in foreign nations while providing stable careers for Kenyan educators.
- Mhandisi Majuu Programme – Facilitating the migration of engineers and technicians to industries abroad, with a successful pilot project already placing Kenyan workers in an aluminium company in Larisa, Greece.
Strengthening Global Partnerships for Job Accessibility
Beyond individual placements, the Kenyan government is fostering international agreements to facilitate smooth migration and employment processes for skilled professionals.
Among the most significant partnerships is the Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement with Germany, which provides Kenyans with work permits and residence opportunities in key sectors facing labour shortages, including healthcare, engineering, hospitality, and construction.
To further streamline migration processes, Kenya has also launched a German language examination centre, making it easier for professionals to meet certification requirements and transition into Germany’s workforce.
Diaspora’s Economic Impact and the Future of Kenya’s Global Workforce
Beyond employment, Kenyans in the diaspora continue to play a critical role in driving the country’s economic growth through remittances.
Ms. Njogu highlighted that between June 2023 and June 2024, remittance inflows increased by 7.4%, fueling investments in real estate, agribusiness, and manufacturing.
These inflows are a testament to the resilience of Kenyans working abroad, whose financial contributions are reshaping the nation’s economic landscape.
With more structured migration pathways, this economic impact is expected to grow exponentially.
