Isiolo, Kenya| A herder was shot dead, and a bodaboda rider severely injured in Belgesh, Isiolo South Constituency, as security forces intensified operations in the region.

The incident, which occurred on February 23, 2025, has sparked outrage among locals, with residents accusing security officers of excessive force and indiscriminate targeting.

Fatal Shooting in Belgesh

The deceased, identified as Galgalo Abkul Boru, was fatally shot when police officers on patrol allegedly opened fire on a motorcycle carrying him and the rider in Belgesh, a small market center near Gafarsa township.

The bodaboda rider survived the attack but sustained life-threatening injuries to his head and hand, with reports indicating he may lose his hand due to the severity of the wounds.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described the attack as brutal and unwarranted, emphasizing that both men were unarmed civilians.

According to them, Galgalo’s body was left almost unrecognizable due to the extent of the injuries.

Security Operation Under Scrutiny

The incident comes amid an ongoing security crackdown dubbed “Operation Ondoa Jangili”, spearheaded by the National Police Service (NPS).

The operation reportedly aims to flush out members of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF-OLA), a group that authorities allege is involved in drug trafficking and other illegal activities.

However, locals across Isiolo South, including residents of Garbatulla, Chari, Cherab, and Sericho wards, have raised concerns over what they describe as a disproportionate use of force.

They accuse security personnel of targeting innocent civilians under the guise of the operation, spreading fear and tension in the region.

Calls for Justice

Despite the gravity of the situation, police are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.

Meanwhile, Galgalo’s family, friends, and other concerned residents are demanding accountability.

They have called for independent investigations into the killing and urged authorities to ensure justice is served.

The injured bodaboda rider remains in critical condition, and there are growing concerns about the long-term impact of security operations on the livelihoods and safety of residents in Isiolo South.

As fear grips the region, human rights activists and local leaders are now pressing the government to ensure that security operations do not infringe upon the rights of innocent civilians.

Many are calling for an urgent review of Operation Ondoa Jangili to prevent further loss of innocent lives.

With tensions rising, the people of Isiolo are left questioning whether the quest for security has come at too high a cost.
