The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a comprehensive progress report on the ongoing multi-agency security operation dubbed “Ondoa Jangili”, launched on February 3, 2025, in Marsabit and Isiolo counties.
The operation aims to dismantle criminal networks responsible for insecurity, cross-border incursions, and organized crime along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
Unmasking a Criminal Network
Security forces have uncovered a well-coordinated criminal enterprise operated by remnants of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) within the two counties.
Intelligence-led operations have revealed that these groups had established makeshift camps deep within the region, which they used as operational bases for illegal activities, including smuggling, human trafficking, and arms proliferation.
Following sustained security efforts, 14 makeshift camps believed to have been set up by these criminal elements have been destroyed.
The dismantling of these strongholds has significantly disrupted the group’s operations, dealing a major blow to their illegal activities.
Seizures and Recoveries
In a significant breakthrough, security forces have recovered a cache of weapons, counterfeit currency, illicit drugs, and other items used to facilitate criminal activities. Among the seized items are:
- 10 assorted firearms and a stockpile of ammunition.
- Various firearm holsters, indicating possible distribution networks.
- Fake currency in US Dollars and Ethiopian Birr, hinting at cross-border financial crimes.
- A water bowser lorry, suspected to be used for logistical support.
- Nine motorcycles and two motor vehicles, likely used for transportation and escape.
- Sackfuls of cannabis weighing approximately 200kg, suggesting links to drug trafficking.
- Solar panels and generators, possibly used for remote camp operations.
- Military gear and caps, raising concerns over possible impersonation of security personnel.
- Oromia literature and propaganda materials, pointing to ideological indoctrination efforts.
These recoveries underscore the magnitude of criminal activities that had taken root in the region, endangering the safety of residents and undermining national security.
Criminal Crackdown and Legal Proceedings
Authorities have also made several arrests, with multiple cases currently pending before the courts.
The crackdown has sent a strong message that law enforcement agencies are determined to bring perpetrators to justice and restore order in the affected areas.
Impact on Security and Stability
The impact of Operation “Ondoa Jangili” has been immediate and profound. By dismantling the criminal infrastructure, law enforcement agencies have significantly curtailed activities such as:
- Proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
- Illegal mining and resource exploitation.
- Human trafficking and forced labor.
- Cross-border incursions and infiltration of criminal elements.
- Kidnappings for ransom, which had terrorized communities.
These efforts have brought relief to residents, ending the cycle of fear, violence, and economic disruption that had plagued the region for years.
Call for Public Cooperation
While security forces remain steadfast in their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the National Police Service has urged local communities to play an active role in the success of this operation. Residents are encouraged to:
- Remain calm and support security efforts.
- Report suspicious activities or individuals linked to criminal networks.
- Cooperate with law enforcement agencies by sharing intelligence that could prevent future attacks.
Operation “Ondoa Jangili” has proven to be a highly effective countermeasure against crime in Marsabit and Isiolo counties. By dismantling the criminal network, law enforcement agencies have restored peace, security, and stability along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
The government remains committed to ensuring that criminal elements are permanently eradicated and that residents can live without fear of violence or exploitation.
As the operation progresses, continued collaboration between security forces and local communities will be crucial in ensuring long-term peace and security in the region.
