Baringo County residents are in mourning following the passing of their senator, William Cheptumo, who succumbed to illness at a Nairobi hospital.

Leaders, residents, and stakeholders from various sectors have come forward to eulogize the late legislator, remembering him as a dedicated servant of the people, a champion of development, and a unifying figure in the county’s leadership.

A Lifetime of Service

Cheptumo’s political career spanned nearly two decades, during which he served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Baringo North for 15 years before being elected senator, a position he held for three years until his untimely demise.

His leadership saw significant transformation in the county, particularly in the areas of education, infrastructure, and peace-building.

Former Kabartonjo Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), James Cheptoo, led tributes to the late senator, acknowledging his immense contributions.

“He was instrumental in the establishment of several institutions and churches across the county, strengthening his bond with the electorate. His absence leaves a gap that will be difficult to fill,” Cheptoo remarked during a press briefing in Kabarnet town.

Despite being a devoted member of the African Inland Church (AIC), Senator Cheptumo demonstrated inclusivity by supporting the construction of places of worship for different denominations.

His efforts in the education sector were also notable, with one of his key achievements being the elevation of Ossen Girls’ High School to national status, making it the top-performing institution in the county.

A Champion of Peace and Governance

The late senator was also remembered for his relentless efforts to restore peace in the conflict-prone areas of Baringo North and South sub-counties.

Former Saimo Soi MCA, Richard Kampala, highlighted Cheptumo’s role in spearheading initiatives to curb insecurity and facilitate the creation of more administrative units to enhance governance and service delivery.

Elizabeth Keitany, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Baringo Branch Treasurer, described him as a father figure whose wisdom and mentorship benefited many leaders, regardless of their political affiliations.

“Even when bedridden, he remained committed to assisting the less fortunate and providing guidance to the next generation of leaders,” Keitany stated.

Condolence Books and a Call for Respect

To honor his memory, plans are underway to open condolence books at strategic locations, including the governor’s office, the county assembly, and the county commissioner’s office, where residents can express their sympathies and support for the bereaved family.

Meanwhile, leaders have urged restraint from premature political campaigns to fill the vacant senate seat.

The first pioneer MCA for Kapropita Ward emphasized that in Kalenjin culture, engaging in political maneuvering during mourning is inappropriate.

He called on leaders to respect the grieving period and focus on preserving the senator’s legacy of humility, unity, and selfless service.

A Lasting Legacy

As Baringo County comes to terms with the loss of a distinguished leader, Senator William Cheptumo’s legacy remains etched in the hearts of many.

His unwavering commitment to development, education, peace, and inclusivity has left a lasting impact that will continue to shape the county for years to come.

The residents of Baringo will remember him not only as a politician but as a statesman who placed the interests of his people above all else—an icon of integrity, resilience, and service.
