Nairobi, Kenya| The Kenyan government has issued an urgent cyber-security alert following a suspected data breach within the systems of the Registrar of Companies.
The alert comes after the Kenya Registration Services Bureau (BRS) flagged a potential security compromise, prompting swift action from the Ministry of Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy.
In response to the potential breach, the Ministry has assembled a high-level multi-agency security team tasked with investigating the matter, containing any threats, and ensuring the protection of sensitive government data.
The team is also working closely with international cyber-security agencies to enhance the country’s cyber resilience and mitigate the risks posed by cyber threats.
Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi, Information, Communications, and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary (CS) William Kabogo reassured Kenyans that the government is treating the matter with the highest level of urgency.
He emphasized that the security and integrity of Kenya’s digital infrastructure remain a top priority.
“The Ministry is actively collaborating with international cyber-security agencies responsible for overseeing cyberspace governance to address and mitigate the issue effectively,” Kabogo stated.
Public Urged to Strengthen Cyber-Security Practices
While assuring the public that necessary measures are being taken, the CS stressed that cyber-security is a shared responsibility.
He urged Kenyans to adopt stringent online security practices to safeguard personal and institutional data from cyber threats.
He recommended the following measures to enhance digital security:
- Ensuring that all devices have the latest security updates and antivirus software installed.
- Regularly updating passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication where possible.
- Exercising caution when sharing sensitive personal information online.
- Verifying the authenticity of websites and emails to prevent phishing attacks.
- Conducting regular backups of critical data to prevent loss in case of cyber incidents.
Government’s Commitment to Cyber-Security
Kabogo affirmed that the Ministry, through its various agencies, will continue to issue advisories and guidance to help citizens and businesses understand best practices for data protection and privacy.
He further encouraged the public to report any suspicious cyber activities to the Ministry via its official communication channels, including email at info@information.go.ke.
The CS was flanked by ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary (PS) Eng. John Tanui and State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications PS Prof. Edward Kisiang’ani, alongside other senior ministry officials.
With cyber threats on the rise globally, the Kenyan government remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening digital security measures to safeguard both public and private sector data.
Further updates on the situation are expected as investigations progress.
